Lawns get "dunked on" by midwits. Grass soaks up rain better than hardscape, stops erosion, keeps dust and mud down, cools the area compared to bare dirt or gravel, and gives you a surface for kids, dogs, etc. You can keep it low-input and still get those benefits, and for a lot of people it is the simplest way to have usable outdoor space that is not a maintenance nightmare.
Also their idea that you can just plant wildflowers and have tons of bees and stuff and be some enviromental masterman is lol, it is a ton of work to maintain the soil conditions for that and ecological succession will mean grasses and forbs take over ina year or 2 anyway then it turns to brush and woodland
