On their mother’s side there’s all these people. Cousins, aunts, uncles, even great aunts and great uncles, grandparents. Then there’s this sense that I come from this weird sort of place that doesn’t exist anymore and is only half remembered. There’s heaviness in the air whenever we’ve gone to see one or another. Things left unsaid. Tension in the air so strong it’ll make the hairs on the back of your neck stand up like you’re inside one of those cherry red plastic tube slides that drops auspiciously into a ball pit. But at Oma’s house the ball pit is a dark labyrinth of sleeping snakes. |

Bonus points if they're adult friends who don't even have kids the same age - they'll definitely think your kids birthday party is very interesting because you've done such a great job planning it than every other kid birthday party.
Whatever you do, don't invite the grandparents who are blood related to the kids and would actually be ecstatic to attend. |
