I've been looking for another associate and a headhunter has sent me a candidate that might work out (after sending me several that would absolutely not work out). I may make an offer, but the headhunter wants a huge fee. Either a one time payment of 25% of the employee's salary, or the employee can be an employee of the headhunter for a year and I can pay the headhunter, at about a 75% markup.
The headhunter is providing an important service here, and I probably never would have met this candidate otherwise. But that is steep. Any tricks for paying less?

1. Make sure it only ties to base.
2. Fee only due upon successful completion of all prescreening requirements and the first day of work.
3. Minimum 6 month guarantee, with no room for extra payments if you need to replace a bad hire with someone more expensive.

Headhunters are basically a necessity these days. Most have like a 3 month guarantee of some kind.
I was super resistant to using one and applied using all methods others suggested in this threat to avoid using a head hunter and the quality of candidates across the board was essentially garbage.
Even then I used a cheaper head hunter and he supplied garbage as well. I finally got a recommendation for a headhunter from someone I trust who had hired several people through her. She was the most expensive by a decent amount (30%) with a 3 month guarantee, but she delivered. Candidate had great work experience, fit in well with the firm, was requesting a reasonable starting salary with a percentage (we're plaintiff's side).
Wouldn't hesitate to use her again even though it was painful paying her the 30% up front upon hiring the guy.
