It's a shame Nolan is a mediocre visual director. The colors all look so washed out and muted.
Interesting that they're not teasing any of the monsters.

the screenplay for The Dark Knight is one of the worst I've ever read. screenwriting 101 students at my local community college could do better. He is a very good director (not great), but his skills are technical and he needs to remove himself from the creative aspect.
if he wrote and produced The Odyssey - it will not be all that good.

You aren't wrong imho. On the page, The Dark Knight is an unpleasant read. The dialogue is declarative to the point of parody. Characters speak as if they are issuing position papers, not revealing interior life. Motivation is telescoped, psychology is implied rather than earned, and Dent’s collapse is so aggressively expedited that it reads less like tragedy than like a logical operation. In isolation, the screenplay violates almost every norm contemporary screenwriting culture fetishizes: voice, texture, gradual transformation, emotional specificity. If you handed this script to a development executive without context, it would die in coverage.
The mistake critics make is assuming the screenplay is intended as a literary object. It isn’t imo. It’s instrumental writing. Nolan’s scripts are not meant to persuade through prose; they are meant to survive translation into image, duration, and montage. What looks like bad writing on the page is in fact intentional austerity, a stripping away of anything that would interfere with structural clarity once the Film enters motion. The characters are thin because thickness would be catastrophic. This film does not want psychology; it wants operability. Batman is not underwritten imo. He is deliberately depersonalized into a civic symbol. The Joker is not shallow fwiw. He is a destabilizing variable, closer to a theorem than a man. Demanding depth from him misunderstands his function entirely. Yes, Dent turns too fast. But that speed is not incompetence; it’s refusal. The film rejects the bourgeois fantasy that moral collapse must be slow, intimate, and cathartic. It asserts instead that legitimacy is fragile, that institutions fail abruptly, and that chaos does not wait for character development. IOW, the screenplay is “bad” in precisely the ways required for the film to exist. A more elegant, humane, psychologically persuasive script would have softened the argument. It would have reintroduced comfort. It would have lied. Nolan sacrifices the page to preserve the structure. That tradeoff produces a script that reads crude, even amateurish, to people trained to equate polish with intelligence. But the ugliness is load-bearing. Remove it, and the film collapses into just another well-written nothing imo.
