No it is suggesting at least PART of the deep ancestry signal predates the African/non-African pop split, so that SOME variants contributing to it could be broadly shared among living humans. Read more carefully bro. This doesn't establish that every human pop carries the same ghost segments in the same amounts and from the same admixing events.
The primary inference was performed on West Africans (yoruba, esan, gambian, mende) genomes and that's where they got the 2-19% ancestry estimates. |

Their genome wide ancestry maps were constructed only for yoruba and Mende. The approx. 6.6-7% of the sequence classified as putatively archaic and the high frequency candidate loci are SPECIFICALLY west african results.
The non-African signal is confounded by known Neanderthal introgression. A U-shaped spectrum in those populations isn't a clean measurement of this particular ghost lineage. And the paper only concludes that “at least part” was shared before the split. |

The only thing they can say definitively in the paper given their underpowered tests is that there is DNA from the ghost species in all humans. |

It just means there are many histories that are compatible observationally with the chosen modeling. How do you get that failing to exclude pre-split history is evidence the entire signal was pre-split?
I think what you are doing is basically taking uncertainty in modeling and using that in support for your preferred scenario where "possibly all humans carry the ghost ancestry". |

It doesn't quantify what fraction is universally shared, nor demonstrate that the entire inferred contribution in West Africans is identical to what is present elsewhere.

The paper found analogous signals in the sampled CEU and Han Chinese populations and concluded that at least part of the inferred ancestry component predates the CEU–YRI split. It did not prove that the entirety of the component inferred in West Africans is universally shared, that all populations carry equal amounts, or that they carry identical segments.
Your news quote does not establish that either. It says two non-African sampled groups “showed signs,” then says they were not studied as closely. Two sampled non-African groups are not “all humans,” and “showed signs” is not a quantitative demonstration that the full West African-inferred component is universal.
The 2–19% estimates and the detailed local-ancestry analysis were specifically obtained from West African populations. Saying that does not imply zero ancestry elsewhere or that Africans necessarily have more. |
