The USS Nimitz, a US Navy aircraft carrier, experienced a dual incident where a fighter jet, specifically an F/A-18F Super Hornet, and a helicopter, an MH-60R Sea Hawk, crashed into the South China Sea within 30 minutes of each other. Fortunately, all crew members were safely rescued and reported to be in stable condition. The incidents occurred on Sunday, October 26, while the USS Nimitz was conducting routine operations in the South China Sea ¹ ² ³. The F/A-18F Super Hornet, assigned to Strike Fighter Squadron 22, "Fighting Redcocks", crashed around 3:15 pm local time, and both pilots ejected safely. In December, the guided-missile cruiser USS Gettysburg mistakenly shot down an F/A-18 jet from the Truman.
Then, in April, another F/A-18 fighter jet slipped off the Truman's hangar deck and fell into the Red Sea.
And in May, an F/A fighter jet landing on the carrier in the Red Sea went overboard after apparently failing to catch the steel cables used to stop landing planes and forcing its two pilots to eject. |
