The six million meme and the homicidal gas chamber concept is tied largely to the testimony of Rudolf Hoss, who himself tossed out 2.5 million Jews gassed at Auschwitz and ~3mm total dead under his watch. The Soviets immediately after the war in 1945 said it was 4mm gassed, and that number was on a plaque at the camp until the 1990s. Now mainstream "scholars" (see: lying Jews) say it was more like 1.5 million.

Hoss's testimony came after massive torture in allied captivity. Brit head of intelligence Lord Cavendish Bentinck who had been listening to German intercepts for years sent a letter to the other allies in late 1943 saying very explicitly that he thought the Jews talking about gas chambers were making shit up and that he hadn't heard anything suggesting that in any of the many German communications on the labor camps. There are letters written by Oswald Pohl (SS head of the camp system) to Himmler in late 1943 talking about their efforts to reduce death rates in the camps.
