The brits were content with keeping mainland Europe fractionalized so that no single entity could gain enough power to run the table. However, with the unification of Germany that was too much for them to take. So they set about creating pivot point where they could ensure instability. This lead to the ridiculous treaties put in place that they knew would make ww1 inevitable as an example. Ww1 they had the intent of crushing German infrastructure but they never got a chance. Ww2 they made sure to finish the job. That's really just scratching the surface.
