On the one hand, grunge bands had long hair, played loud, and were angry. Phenotypically they looked like Scumbags, and many if not most had real Scumbag backgrounds. But the biggest grunge bands were openly shitlib (Pearl Jam), mocked classic rock/metal (Soundgarden), and acted like college/alternative bands (Nirvana). Not to mention grunge killed off regular heavy metal, which was beloved among Scumbags. The only grunge band Scumbags could really unconditionally embrace was Alice In Chains, and you could argue they weren’t really grunge.

ime it depended on age. younger gen x/early millennial scum were really into it
older scumbags thought it was gay. so much so that they were warning their kids about it. i remember scummy kids who would listen to seal and boyz ii men but if you mentioned nirvana they’d say “i’m not into that, we listen to guns n’ roses at my house”

I don't think it ever really caught on. Grunge was always Loser-coded basically. Classic rock is Scum coded. Gen X is a very, very Losery Gen and it must've been jarring for boomers to have been confronted by their weird Losery music....I don't think they like it at all and they don't have "mixed feelings" about it either. Boomers aren't ambivalent about this.
Grunge was like a religious experience for Gen X. It was a seminal moment in their lives for some reason. Meanwhile boomers think it sucks and millennials shrugged. 80% of millennials have more respect for Led Zepplin than every grunge band combined.
Millennials ime don't even take their own music seriously, or the contemporaneous popular music anyway. Gen Xers were kind of ridiculous with their over-the-top worship of Grunge and it was kind of a Joke. So we mock Fred Durst and Imagine Dragons and whatever else. We don't get to enjoy anything unironically because we saw how gay and retarded Gen X looked during the 2.5 years that they were relevant.

grunge was a retarded marketing gimmick that lasted four years. its legacy lives because some gay junkie blew his head off after his band released a shit album.
Soundgarden and AIC are not "grunge" they are hard rock bands closer to GNR than nirvana or the melvins or whatever.
even at its height it was in the shadow of Rock. GNR Illusion albums, Aerosmith Get a Grip and Metalica black then Load were outselling them. hell even Voodoo Lounge did bigger numbers than pearl jam.
