how the fuck do people live with themselves going to an office into their 30s and beyond

you can work more than that in bursts but on a pedestrian day you can't be expected to be chained to your office just because you're "expected" to be lmao. what a fucking waste of life.

if you truly work 8 hours per day doing brain burning intellectual work, you can't realistically do it for more than a week or two max at a time. anyone saying otherwise is kidding themselves.

people here are biased because they're lawyers and biglaw shit is extremely tedious

there are 100% programmers and the like who work nonstop 8+ hours a day. it's a very small percentage admittedly, but pretending they're unicorns is just incorrect. these people exist and they are better at the job than I am

How do they keep up the passion for coding widgets and solving little logic puzzles of staggering complexity all day long? What's their secret?

they like it and get used to it

realistically most people who get to this level did a shitton of work when they were relatively young (teens/early-mid 20s) when you can tolerate putting in a lot of effort/long days without getting as tired. so it's just a muscle they've built

Do they have any ability to unwind and enjoy life on the weekends

He's right, it's not actually possible to do truly high level cognitive work for more than a few hours a day tops. It's extremely taxing even for very gifted people

Most people's white collar work, including law, just isn't actually high level cognitive work. It's mostly glorified flow chart work. I don't mean that as a criticism just as a point of comparison versus, say, complex abstract novel problem-solving from scratch that requires continuous full focus to even maintain a cognitive workspace

i see it. they are just completely empty people. you need time for your mind to breathe only if there is a use for the oxygen. these people suffocated their souls to death many years ago.
