Jung's enduring value lies not in his metaphysics but in his social and psychological critique. His central insight is that societies systematically misidentify certain dimensions of human development as evil, pathological, irrational, or dangerous. Individuation often requires confronting precisely those aspects of oneself that prevailing norms condemn. In this respect, Jung functions as a critic of conformity and of the reduction of human life to socially approved modes of thought and behavior.

The problem arises when Jung universalizes this insight. What may begin as a valid observation about psychological development becomes transformed into a grand metaphysical system. Because the path toward wholeness frequently requires integrating traits that society labels evil, Jung concludes that evil must belong to the structure of the Self itself. He then extends this logic further, suggesting that God contains evil and that divine reality itself is constituted by oppositions that must be reconciled.

This inference is unwarranted. The fact that psychological growth requires the integration of socially rejected contents does not imply that ultimate reality contains evil. It shows only that societies often misjudge what is necessary for human flourishing. The shadow may reveal the limits of social morality without revealing the nature of God.

Jung's appeal to cross-cultural symbolism does little to strengthen the argument. Similar myths, symbols, and narrative patterns can arise from shared features of human life, common developmental experiences, recurring social structures, and the basic conditions of embodiment. The recurrence of a motif across cultures does not establish the existence of archetypes as metaphysical realities. At most, it demonstrates that human beings tend to generate similar symbolic forms under similar conditions.

As a result, Jung's strongest claims are also his weakest. His psychological observations often possess genuine insight, particularly where they expose the one-sidedness of dominant cultural values. Yet he repeatedly converts psychological patterns into ontological conclusions. What begins as a critique of social norms becomes a theory of reality itself.

The most defensible reading of Jung therefore preserves his counter-cultural function while rejecting his metaphysical ambitions. His importance lies in revealing how accepted moral and cognitive frameworks can suppress dimensions of human development. His mistake lies in mistaking this conflict between the individual and society for a revelation of the ultimate structure of being.
