I gave up on most Infocom text adventure games I played. It was possible to fuck yourself early in the game by consuming or destroying an object that had no obvious utility, but that would become valuable later in the game.
This is the single most punishing game mechanic of all time. 15 minutes into the game you might permafuck yourself without knowing, and go on to play the next 2/3 of the game without any possibility of winning.

like zurich i rarely finish games these days. i think the last game i completed with persona 5. i played baulder's gate 3 and elden ring into the end game but stopped. once life gets in the way and i have to take a prolonged break the non-fun of having to relearn the game's mechanics and what's going out outweighs the fun of the game, so i don't complete it.
i haven't played anything in a while but i tend to like shorter, challenging games as opposed to long rpg slogs, only because it suits my lifestyle. back in day i loved rpgs or competitive multiplayer games like sc2.
