Not since a 2010 buddy cop film starring Bruce Willis and Tracey Morgan which he did not write has he been in the black.
How can a guy go 14 years and 8 films and not make money once? How is that possible? Most of his early films made money or broke even. But how can you survive for 14 years and not make a dime? Is the secret having investors, paying yourself up front, and losing other people's money?

Have you thought about if actors, even bit actors, are also worthy of a partial director credit? They direct their own action and it's really more of a collaboration. Having one named "director" is more of a legal formalism than an accurate description of what's happening here.

No you haven't thought about it, or no that actors don't deserve a directors credit? Two totally different scenarios although I'd argue your logic is flawed either way

I mean, the actor could also yell at people and tell them to stop. Who's going to stop them? You? The cops? The fat cats in Washington?

But contracts require a meeting of the mind. If enforceability requires the meeting of the mind with the actor and the director, then the director is an actor and the actor is a director. It's all one beautiful tapestry, just like Die Hard 4. Think about it.

What happens sometimes with really famous, successful artists is they're develop a cult of personality. I mean just look at how people like Jeff and MacKenzie Bezos give people like Van Jones and the Obamas life altering money as a gift. There's gotta be tons of Gen X fags whose minds got blown through the roof the first time they listened to Primus or saw Mallrats and just went this is gonna be my shit for the rest of my life.
So you're vegan Kevin Smith. You haven't 𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺 had a big hit, if we're being honest, since 2001 or so. You want to put your mid dotter in some vehicle to get her on the big screen. You have been in pictures long enough to know there aren't 4000 theatres willing to screen this turd. You're going to do like zero marketing. You just have to pay yourself and the actors and then you go on the road and do a Q&A and the 50 biggest Kevin Smith heads in every town in America are going to pay 100 bucks to come see you.
But wait, how do you finance this crap? You have to go through your phone and ring up some Gen Xers. You have to find the people who aced OCI. And then you pitch them, like a bitch. You get down on your hands and knees and say, remember me? I'm Kevin FUCKING Smith. I made Chasing Amy. Clerks, that was a good one. Remember how good you felt when they were playing roller hockey on top of that gas station in New Jersey? I'm the guy who did that. Now sign here and here that's a check made out to BongJesus productions for 750,000k and you own 5% of this turd and after we gross 25,000 dollars your share is $1250 plus whatever it makes on streaming and on demand. Thank you, and have a nice day.

not familiar with how he funds...
but he has a giant low iq neckbeard redditor cult.
does he crowdsource a bunch of it from people who don't care if they lose money because they're part of helping kevin smith create his art?

A few things here:
1. His movies aren't that expensive. So he has to raise like $5 mm. Think of how CSLG and his dumb sushi restauarnt. How many people are there in that same income bracket who would love to give $1 mm to say they're producing a Kevin Smith movie.
2. He can pre-sell a lot of this shit to streamers. Apple TV pays $15 mm per episode for episodes of the morning show. Disney spent $20 mm on each episode of the Acolyte. Not unreasonable for them to spend a couple of million bucks and say "Hey we have the exclusive for Clerks III!"
