DENVER (KDVR) — Two times this week, people in a Denver neighborhood have taken to social media to post about their cars being intentionally set on fire and one victim caught the incident on camera.

Rachel Heckel leaves her car parked outside of her home in the Highland neighborhood but has never had anything like this happen before. She doesn’t usually lock her car doors because of concerns people may break her windows to get in.

“I don’t really worry about leaving it unlocked, I just don’t leave anything in it,” said Heckel.

She’s starting to rethink that after what happened with her car recently.

“I noticed that the door was cracked a little, actually kind of like it is right now,” said Heckel as she stood in front of her car.

Everything looked okay from the outside but inside was a different story.

“Opened the door, took half a breath and the stench was, like, awful,” said Heckel.

She was met with the smell of burnt plastic and the sight of the inside of her car melted.

“You can see the windows are all dark and grayed out from the smoke damage and, yeah, kind of a mess,” said Heckel.

Her neighbor’s security camera caught footage showing a person opening the passenger door and sitting in the car for a brief period before eventually walking away with flames visible through the car’s window.

“I was pretty shocked,” said Heckel.

Never leaving anything valuable in the car, she’s at a loss for why this would happen.

“This car, it’s only a 2017, it was in great shape, like, 35,000 miles on it. It’s totaled. Completely destroyed,” she said..

While insurance is able to help her replace the car, Heckel warns people who may not be as fortunate to keep a vigilant eye out.

“Keep that in mind that they can do some really destructive damage,” she said.

FOX31 contacted both Denver Police and Denver Fire about the incidents and a public information officer with DFD told us he was unaware of any kind of investigation into the incidents.
