But ordinary damage to blood vessels is irregular and leaves the severed ends tattered. That's what tells your body to tell your blood to produce clotting factors. If you make a clean cut through a blood vessel with a sharp knife, the severed ends will be smooth and they'll still register as "intact," so you won't produce and clotting factors and you'll just bleed to death.
