AUSTIN (KXAN) — Three people are dead, including the shooter, and at least 14 others are injured after a gunman opened fire at a popular bar on West Sixth Street early Sunday morning.
Austin police officers responded to Buford’s Bar, near the intersection of West Sixth and Rio Grande Street, after multiple calls about a man with a gun. APD Chief Lisa Davis said three officers shot back toward the suspect, who died.
The suspect was not identified publicly, but KXAN confirmed with multiple sources that the shooter was 53-year-old Ndiaga Diagne.

Federal partners, including the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), also responded to the scene. The Austin Police Department said their investigation is ongoing.
The FBI said its joint terrorism task force team members, as well as other specialty teams, were investigating. During a briefing, the FBI said there were “indicators” of terrorism related to the shooting.
How has Sixth Street changed since the 2021 mass shooting?
The location
Buford’s is in the 700 block of West Sixth Street, between Rio Grande Street and West Avenue. Several popular nightlife spots line a four-block span of West Sixth in either direction.
West Sixth Street from Guadalupe Street to North Lamar Boulevard was closed to all traffic and officials were asking everyone to avoid the area and find alternate routes.

The shooting
Chief Davis said an SUV drove around the area several times before the suspect fired a handgun out of the window. Those shots hit people on the patio and in front of the bar, according to police.
Davis said the suspect then parked the vehicle on Wood Street, got out, and shot his gun at people walking by. Police responded at that time, and the suspect was shot and killed.
According to police, two weapons, a pistol and a rifle, were used in the shooting.
The victims
ATCEMS said medics took 14 people to the hospital after the shooting. Of those 14, three were in critical condition as of the last report.

“I’m very thankful for the speed with which our public safety officials responded to this,” said Austin Mayor Kirk Watson. “I don’t think there’s any question that it saved lives.”
Davis said officers and ATCEMS medics were able to respond quickly to the area because of customary staging over on East Sixth Street. ATCEMS Chief Robert Luckritz said his medics were on scene within 57 seconds of getting the call at 1:59 a.m.

Austin Police Association speaks on deadly mass shooting response
KXAN spoke with Austin Police Association President Michael Bullock, who confirmed the suspect was one of the three people who died.
Bullock said this incident was something they don’t ever want to see, but to know the Austin Police Department is here for you and the city is here for you.
“The last time this happened, we were dealing with over on East Sixth, which does have more people, but West Sixth is still a populated area,” Bullock said. “I think it happened then, and it happened again now, where officers still got there quickly, where they were committed to providing medical aid as soon as we possibly can. Then, and even more so now, we have teams that are dedicated to this type of response.”
