Hustle: wine and dine as many wealth managers and financial planners as you possible can. Give them a rate for a basic will and power of attorney package that is slightly cheaper than the going rate in your town. Focus on younger yuppie families with small children.

Find a great set of forms from somewhere, get a few trust and estate lawyer friends to bounce questions off of and occasionally ask for language (when your client wants something funky in their will)

Get to know a good accountant to send clients to, and to bounce tax questions off of related to trusts and stuff

If you're chasing high net worth clients, leave the treatise at home and get good at golfing. If you're chasing middle class clients, learn the treatise, but more and more you will need to know elder law (Medicaid planning for long term care). Otherwise, your estate plan will fuck the client when the POA can't move assets for Medicaid or when one spouse dies and leaves money to the spouse who needs to get resources down for Medicaid.

How much of T&E law is just plugin basic client information into forms / templates?

I get the impression that's 90% of it.

That is 90% of it, the other 10% being waiting for them to die so you can make real money on the estate administration. But changes in the law do happen and you need to update your documents. And basic shit like when to use a trust vs. a will. Gets a little more complicated if you handle a small family-owned business as part of the planning.

T&E is mal heaven, and you are guaranteed to be fighting mal accusations at the end of every single case, over every single penny.

Seems more nightmarish than divorce, tbh. Who needs the fucking aggravation for shitlaw salary

Do you have a good grasp of property and wills? It isn't too difficult to draw a will for a poor person.

If you are representing a PR in your first case you should probably work underneath an old lawyer for a bit.

The fuck? T&E is a low malpractice risk area. Family law and criminal are where most malpractice risk sits. T&E lawyers buy those $2000 practice guide sets and just recycle the forms for 30 years. There is no malpractice risk.

I think you don't know what you are talking about if you think criminal has high malpractice risk. All your old clients are in prison, so who what are they going to do?

Your state bar association almost certainly has CLE materials on the fundamentals, including templates. That will get you started, point you to the right title in your state statutes to learn, and help you know why the template says what it says. But seriously, if you are taking high net worth clients, you will need to learn tax issues and become familiar with the various kinds of trusts.
