agree with all the answers above. would add that over time politicians have realized that voters do not value bipartisanship, and super PACS and whatnot enforce more ideological purity and run primaries against moderates

More polarized electorate and gerrymandered districts means you get more extreme congress members who don't have to worry about losing a general election and don't have to appeal to moderate normies. I'm sure there used to be more swing districts than now.

Also most congressmen in the 80s were white men, a lot of them WWII or Korea vets. Now, LJL.

Congressmen hoping to get noticed before then had to grind for 10-20 years, work their way up from subcommittee chair to committee chair, etc. while delivering for their constituents. Now Congressmen can build a following from day one simply by going viral in an interview or committee hearing.
