more afraid about not living atm

I was really afraid of dying when I was like 12. Then a bunch of people died when I was 18-20. I think I'm more or less indifferent to it now that I've reached the age where it hits a lot of people.

for some people, certainly

it depends what you work on, who you work for, how much you actually like coding, etc etc

some places swing obnoxiously on the other side of the spectrum, like AGILE STARTUPS with BEER FRIDAYS where you're a ROCKSTAR. shockingly this shit hasn't died out yet, it's been going strong like 5-6 years now.

Humans weren't made to do any of the shit we have been doing for like the last ten thousand years. On the other hand, we get the luxury of not being randomly gutted by a gigantic boar or dying of typhoid at 23.

Also, I don't know any programmers who do that. If anything they're annoyed by how excessively open tech company offices tend to be.

Sherlock season 3. It used to be entertaining but turned into a ridiculous fanfic clusterfuck.

There wouldn't be any point on writing on shows which I think were solid all along, or ones I couldn't do justice to even if they had shittier later seasons (e.g. arrested development)

yes and no. I don't like indoor cats--at my old apartment when I had roommates (it had all wood floors) we kept finding cat hairs for literally two years after they moved out.

we had an alpha orange tabby who stayed outdoors growing up though. she used to sleep under the culvert underneath our driveway (although we'd force her to sleep in the garage when we knew it was going to rain or something) and kill birds when we didn't feed her on time. if I ever have a house I might get a cat like that, they seem to be something a relic of the past. nobody has outdoors cats anymore.

I'm more into cooking meals, although I like to bake occasionally. It's just not something I tend to do without a reason though, otherwise my fat ass will just eat the entire pie I made or whatever.

I'm also not as good at is as I am cooking; I've never really completely nailed a pie crust or light roll (I'm not sure what other people call them, they're what my family calls yeast dinner rolls)

My grandmother was supposedly legendary for her light rolls. She was pretty old by the time I have most of my memories of her so I never really got to taste all of her cooking, but I do have one memory of what was probably the last time she really nailed them. It's a kind of smell of perfection you never get out of your head.

That said, my aunt said had to endure years of mediocre rolls in her childhood before they became incredible. Baking seems so much harder to get right than cooking even complex dishes because things vary wildly even from oven to oven, while I can make gumbo over pretty much any source of heat.

I'm a master of none, bro

I'll give the nod to python just for its versatility by simplicity. I've used it in machine learning and to test projects for other classes, write a super basic toy language compiler, etc.

Rust intrigues me the most of all the "hip" new languages but I really know jack shit about it. Julia is a likely R/python killer in the stats/numerical computing/ML/etc. space just by virtue of the fact that it's nearly as fast as compiled C and fairly easy to code in, but I find its structure incredibly goofy.

In terms of LOC I've written the most in java just because java has libraries for everything and it's relatively easy. Writing properly threaded code in java is a bit tricky though, as the ease of use of the tools (compared to, say, C, where you more or less do shit extremely manually) means you have to think more carefully about how you're actually employing them.

The exception to the last sentence is Android, where Google pretty much managed to idiot-proof Java threading where the somewhat narrow scope of mobile apps are concerned.

a bunch, but I only applied to mostly "prestigious" places because I'd rather get experience I can actually publicly display by working for a lab, even if it doesn't pay much. and I interviewed horribly--people who interview and get jobs at facebook or whatever all prep (or they're just super experienced, or savants). most of the jobs I applied for were pie in the sky stuff, as having good experience (and not having to temporarily move) trumps an extra 2k/month for one summer or whatever.

oddly enough one I know I was seriously in the running for was a data analyst/modeling job for an MLB club. I never even expected a response considering I'm sure they get tons of applicants. given that I know more stats/ML stuff at this point I'm definitely going to toss out a few apps on a whim when it comes to find full time jobs even though there's approximately a 1% chance of success.

I like Python too and wish I wrote it more. It was my first exposure to programming, and I used to do a lot of Django and Flask stuff, but these days I'm using almost all JS and a little Ruby for scripting.

I'm seriously considering a part-time/online masters in a few years when I have a little more time. Would you recommend it for someone who is already in the industry?

I can't stand Ruby. The comically abstract syntax put me off to it years ago even though I'd probably have no problem with it now, although it seems when most people say "Ruby" they really mean writing in some DSL with ruby as the base

I don't think anyone really gives a shit about having a masters, it's just about what you know. But there's no way I would've been able to seriously do this any other way than wasting money on MY MASTERS, because I would've just sat around and done nothing otherwise.

IMO the way to go if you already know stuff but seriously want to learn more is one of the cheap online masters programs--that way you get some sense of obligation (you're paying, but not too much) and more importantly the structure which comes with the program. E.g. I never got past basic toying around when I was a teenager because I just got overwhelmed and had no direction--I couldn't connect the dots between visual basic or shell scripts and massive C++ programs, or even really have a clue as to where to begin.

"Just do autodidact coding bro" really only works if either a) you're both very intelligent and extremely motivated, or b) in the context of a fairly narrow and well-defined field like web/mobile dev (which lots of people are, so it works for them). I know I sure as shit couldn't sit down and learn a goddamn thing about distributed systems from a coursera course or whatever.

I also much prefer Python to Ruby, but they are scripts someone else on our team wrote and we all modify to perform different tasks. Not worth my time to rewrite them in Python since they don't get used too often.

I totally agree with you about the self-teaching, and that is why I am interested in a masters. I have a coworker in that online Georgia CS masters program and he has enjoyed it, so that might be an affordable option when the time comes.

that seems to be a good one.

a 180 trillion book if you ever want to toy with lower level stuff is the linux programming interface. understanding C reasonably well (although there's not really much to C once you have a good grasp of pointers) is a prerequisite, but it's probably the best written programming book I've ever encountered. very well written, great examples, utterly massive in scope (you can pick and choose topics after getting some background in the first couple chapters). it's also the kind of knowledge interviewers love to ask about even if it's not relevant to the actual job, because the ones who actually like CS and aren't drones will still reflect fondly on their OS course or whatever if any of the topics come up.

it's written by the same guy who is now in charge of the linux man pages. crazy that one dude can store so much knowledge in his head, there aren't any co-authors or anything. and I think he didn't really even get into UNIX stuff until around 30.

I liked when he used to feud with Joe Caltech, useatoothbrush, etc.

it's was 180 that by more or less pure coincidence an actual successful math major from carleton (useatoothbrush) was on the college bort at the time pensive discovered it. I bet he thought he was hot shit compared to her back then, now he spends his time writing 10000 word blog posts while she is IRL successful.

I vaguely recall her mentioning that he used to pull pensive-shit on a carleton listserv of some sort (this would've been like 11 years ago now). It's utterly remarkable how little he's changed, you have to give him that.

There's some massive Chinese website(s) where TONS of chink CS students share answers on every conceivable question.

For context, CLRS is the "bible" of algorithms, and contains a lot of questions which you can't even find the answer to in English because a) there are a shitload of them, and b) the book is more of a "it's a journey" mentality. It has no answer key, and some of the questions are so deceptively hard that a cs PHD would have trouble figuring it out. Nonetheless, mysteriously our algo HW average was almost always way above whatever I got, and I put a decent amount of effort into it.

I realized they were all cheating when I saw two of them on some website with the question in english and a bunch of shit in chinese, and confirmed this with a non-fob chinese friend of mine. It certainly helped me on the exams though, because all the FOBs (really, visa students, I just call them FOBs) got destroyed as they just copied stuff for the HWs (which counted for basically nothing) and would get gaped come exam time.

Chinkbots are the reason why we can't have nice stuff in CS classes anymore.

A few years ago my machine learning prof tried a take-home final. Now, this is a class which is particularly well suited for a take-home final: it's something where you can only measure progress to a certain extent with an in-class exam, because there are so many topics that someone is fucked if they don't know or forgot a particular one, as there isn't enough time to ask questions on anything other than a small subset of information. Plus you can't really demonstrate problem-solving capability in the timespan of an exam in the same way that's required in projects or hw assignments, as it's impossible to give a tough question which requires coding. He writes excellent homework assignments (from hand, with unique questions [because otherwise chinks will post them online and share]) every single year, but an in-class exam can't come close to replicating that.

Naturally like five chinese students copied each other and thought their code was indistinguishable enough to pass it off. But this is, you know, a MACHINE LEARNING class, which devotes a significant amount of time to amongst other things classification algorithms (of which there are many to detect code that on the surface may look quite different but is almost certainly copied).

So of course all five students got flunked, but something he didn't mention in class that I confirmed talking to him is he can't do it again because the program doesn't like its precious overseas cash cows to get F'd. So thanks to these robotic assholes we're stuck taking an in-class final which doesn't really demonstrate mastery of anything besides taking notes instead of a take-home programming final written by one of the few professors who's able and willing to write genuinely unique and challenging questions for such assignments.

I can only imagine how they've ruined schools which have prestigious honor-code based systems that are actually effective enough to guilt trip even normally shitty white students into playing by the rules. Foreign students have no boundaries or shame.

lmao they're really shameless. Two years ago I was helping teach a class that involved some code and had to grade student projects. Apparently I gave one guy an 8/10 and his friend a 9/10. The 8/10 came to me demanding a 9/10 because his code was the same as his friend's -- and it was EXACTLY the same in most parts, so he did have a point!

The same student later came in after getting a 0 on an exam question because it was identical to his neighbor's. (We had determined that failing the student is an impossible task that's not worth the effort.) He wanted to argue about other sections on the test, implicitly conceding the 0 for cheating, ljl

That's not to say white students never cheat at CS. I TA'd a mostly white "intro to coding/data for poli sci shitheads or whatever" thing and white kids were used to poli sci shithead classes where they all collaborate. They quickly got the idea of the border between "collaboration" and "copying" when I flunked like a third of the class on the first assignment (it wasn't worth much) and warned that the next time they'd get flunked for the entire class.

It's more about how brazen they are about not respecting boundaries whatsoever, and cheating in ways that seem utterly comically juvenile and transparent even to lazy white kids. The worst part is they usually ultimately get away with it because universities are complicit in the "foreign student cash cow" phenomenon. LOL at how we get riled up over some football student getting an A in dipfuck independent study--at least there's no pretext for why they're at the school. These students are ostensibly here to learn real STEM shit.

It's funny that for all the things boomers crow about, nobody cares about the massive decline in things like honor codes. Honor code systems were 180 and now they're a thing of the past, or mostly just for show at schools where they technically exist--spoiled white kids certainly didn't help, but the onslaught of international rich assholes has really destroyed the idea.

They're comically shameless about cheating off each other's exams in the same way a tenth grader would. In every class with midterms or finals the professor has to instruct us to sit far apart like we're in fucking high school, it's ridiculous (something I was only forced to do once in all of college--in what was, shocker, a class full of premeds). In the few classes where someone is naive enough to not realize this, usually a guy who is new, you can just glance over at the cluster of chinkbots and see them blatantly sticking their necks out to see someone else's exam.

Mind you the median age here is somewhere in the late 20s. 26,27,28. And we have to be treated like pubescent dipshits because these faggots have no shame. It's not even that hard to do well in a graduate program; we aren't at caltech UG or whatever, the median is usually a B+ or something. But nonetheless they will try to cheat in every way humanly possible.

Say what you will about the decline of American society or whatever, but holy shit, I've become insanely racist towards Chinese people within a span of less than 9 months.

Not cheating, but still about Chinese people: Chinese TAs are fucking awful. Now, most TAs are sps to begin with, but a good TA in a CS class is 180 as there's nothing more useful than actual feedback on your code. About half of my TAs have been Chinese; at least some of the white guys try, and a few really make an effort. Every single goddamn assignment I've written graded by a chinese TA has consisted of a number and one, MAYBE two sentences, even for a big end of semester project.

It's even worse if the professor doesn't hand them a strictly defined rubric. They'll just give everyone a 90 or whatever arbitrary number they pick and call it a day. Almost my entire distributed systems class got exactly a 90 on the final project, some of which were VASTLY better or worse than others.

I place very strong blame on my Chinese calc TA in college for why I never took more math. Dude could not fucking answer anyone's questions during section and gave such shitty feedback on homeworks

Like I'm pretty sure I left that class with a worse understanding of calculus than if I just hadn't taken it

im worse off for having chinks in my undergrad. the course coordinators all removed answer keys from textbook orders and postulated that 'journey' shit where you go to class and 'do well'. of course this was never the case, im one of those people who likes to read dozens of example questions, i consider all possible permutations of -what ifs- that manipulate equations, come to tests and annihilate with flying marks. because of chinks i had to spend hours googling answer keys because the 1 worked example in a lecture isn't enough. academia is a scam.

decently above average, but remarkably durable and consistent over a very long span. and in the case of reggie, managed to steal bases until fairly late in his career.

I understand pitchers flaming out faster; they simply throw too hard now for longevity to be the norm. But it really is perplexing with hitters--can you think of a player who averages a solid 2 WAR year or whatever for 15 years in recent memory?

This will make you feel worse (sorry) but I regularly cite field camp as the reason I still feel comfortable calling myself a geologist, even if it's hardly true anymore

Do people not do field camp anymore? Did the "department of earth and whatever" drop it as a requirement?

It just seems like traditional field camp is dying out. lots of high tech stuff for most camps last time I googled it. I'm sure they still "learn" the same concepts, but I don't think lots of camps do shit by hand with a brunton and sketchpad or whatever anymore.
