Say you want to do/try EVERYTHING. You have a mindset on slowly and gradually specializing your skills as you go through school. So what major offers you the ability to say "fuck it, I'm applying to all of these jobs and I know they would be at least 70% happy to have me"

What major would you choose?

Maybe the mechanical engineer would have the working model first. But a good economist (not a keynesian socialist) is probably a good businessman. And any decent businessman is focused on the bottom line. You'd probably have a car you could SELL roll off the assembly line quicker. This is a problem with most engineers - they don't think like businessmen.

They also take a year of humanities and liberal arts courses to fill it out.

Engineers with MBAs seem to have the most versatility.

An engineering education is nowhere near as flexible as a math education. One defining characteristic/goal of mathematics is to be as general and context free as possible.

And they asked for "most versatile"--all engineering prepares you for is an entry level monkey work job.

Most versatile double major combination: Econ and Computer science (which subsumes many upper level math courses)

Most versatile triple major: Econ, comp sci, literature with emphasis on great books in western civ (or maybe just history).

put down your brochure please. Some of us actually have engineering degrees, and I can tell you that the material covered in an engineering curriculum is not as general as mathematics or any theoretical science, and engineering courses also tend to cover bits and pieces of material that are useful in a specific context/application, but with little regard to sequence or completeness.

Physics, and I don't just say that because of bias. If you have a degree in physics, you have

a physics background obv.

a solid math background

a pretty good programming background (depending on the school)

depending on the programs at your school and whether you take advantage of them or not, good technical/instrumentation skills.

good critical thinking skills (if you think your critical thinking ability will not improve by taking upper division physics you'll be surprised).

ability to teach, go to grad. school (basically for free as long as you have above a 3.0), work in industry (even with a bachelors), work in engineering, solid background for medical school.

idk, math might be more versatile but physics is pretty credited for versatility as well, and you have to learn most of the useful math that math majors do as a physics major anyway.

TBF, even if we say physics is open to finance and CS, you can just as easily say econ can do the former while still having the ability to do law+business (writing and social skills).

consluting, even.

all physics people do is quant work in finance.

econ people tend to score higher on the verbal and analytic gre than physics majors.

they also tend to write more extensively.

you can use the "physics majors don't study verbal" argument for the former, but the latter is largely innate

physics students score the same average analytical scores as psychology students. art majors score the highest.

mind you, i've met brilliant psychology students.

I'm not sure about this social skills/analytic skills correlation, but even if it exists, it probably has little to do with undergraduate major. More likely than not, you're dealing with a selection issue.

studies say econ majors end up making more in law than physics/math majors though, so the score means nothing.

"A study by Craft and Baker (2003) published in the Journal of Economic Education found that lawyers with degrees in economics earned $10,000 more per year than the average lawyer with another degree. In fact, lawyers with an economics degree earn almost $5,000 more than those with an accounting degree, the second highest degree earners."

Physics/Law grads make less the Accounting grads.

Looked at the study. Interesting but flawed. The regression model shows economics is significant, but not with respect to "for profit employment." More importantly, they don't control for UG class rank, LSAT, LS rank, LS class rank, etc. They suggest LSAT is at least controlled for in part by including the bucket "science & engineering," which has no statistically significant relationship with salary, but this is probably a questionable assumption because this encompasses a number of majors with relatively low average LSAT scores (e.g., bio, chem, comp sci). Also, it's pretty weird to combine something like bio with math. They're barely related.

I wouldn't make any decisions about UG major based on this relatively weak study.
