Grifters is great neo-noir; Society is goofy fun body horror satire; Miracle Mile is one of my favorite movies ever, a weird post-punk LA apocalypse that's both grim and very funny.
Also if you haven't seen them you should watch The 'Burbs and Matinee

if you want an 'art' film which is relatively short and not pretentious, try "Nostos: The Return" (1989):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CcTok5q_Tfs
it's a fantasy movie based on odysseus with almost no dialogue.
the soviets were also making a lot of interesting films toward the end of the USSR, like Zerograd:

A little later than you asked (1999) but this is a grossly underrated movie, one of my all-time favorites. Documentary called "American Movie".
Here is the trailer. It is 180000000000000

Saw gone in 60 seconds for the first time in 25 years last night, does that count? 😝😝😝
Also my first date ever is a story I think you would appreciate:
The summer before junior high, meeting a girl I really liked to see the first fast and furious movie, which was shaping up to be a really awkward Saturday afternoon because one of my sisters made me late, then I walk in and her dad is sitting there next to her…
but the movie blew my 12 year old mind (gorgeous Paul Walker, need I say more?) so I basically forgot about everything else, and assumed I’d blown any chance of seeing her again so just didn’t worry about it once we hugged each other goodbye after the movie…
then I got a letter out of the blue a few months later from her at summer camp, which ended with:
P.S.
I like you
The Indian Summer of Aslan’s 2001…
How is it “2025” btw

this korean film is said to be one of the only accurate depictions of buddhism in all of cinema:
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0097195/
i'm not a buddhist, so i can't confirm or debunk. it is long and slow and meditative, though.

frameup (1993) - a dramatic comedy about a pair of bonnie-and-clyde criminals, but if bonnie and clyde were a lot stupider
dead solid perfect (1988) - a made-for-HBO sports movie about randy quaid as a chaotic golfer
tough guys don't dance (1987) - ridiculous murder-melodrama with a script by norman mailer
little vera (1988) - a late-soviet film about the impending demise of the soviet system as depicted through the life of vera, an aimless and somewhat slutty young woman
betty blue (the extended version) (1986) - possibly the ultimate film about dating a needy BPD girl, and why it doesn't work. arts chicks seem to love it, but they draw the wrong lessons.
