Every beautiful heart-pounding thing you ever thought or did captured in one song. To me, it's absolutely unique in this regard.

All I can say is: WOW. Can’t believe I’d never heard of this (other than the name of the story of course) until now. I briefly had a girlfriend in high school who was really into musicals and theatre stuff and I liked going with her to her girlfriends’ plays etc. (I’m gay though you probably already knew that)…
but I never thought about them much otherwise, and I think understandably given the extremes in quality…
but THIS was a beautifully surreal journey to the past - the gorgeous Belle Epoque… the use of color is incredible, the way they went back and forth between black and white and the glorious medieval color palette of the Belle Epoque / gothic Revival era,
or that scene in the graveyard with colorless aesthetics except for the heartfelt warm glow inside the tomb, or the graveside rose unexpectedly yet somehow not surprisingly turning red at the end, the whispers from beyond the temporal womb…
I think it’s very telling that I got lost in the experience which flew by on wings of angels, and then fell asleep halfway through the credits and had very pleasant dreams, because the bittersweetness reflects the pure truth of this life, along with hinting at the true goodness and true beauty of this life’s Source, doors in the walls of this world abounding…
before waking up to use the bathroom in the wee small hours, and going to bed for real right before the sun began to rise on Palm Sunday… πΉ
Any others you recommend like this? I think the true pantheon of moviemaking would love this one, Walt Disney or Frank Capra or Charlton or Cruise or Mel and the like, representing the greats to say the least! πΆ

(the way Gerard portrayed the Phantom’s soul-saving change of heart moment, to cast off the shackles of his ultimately self-imposed prison: luxuriating in self-pity and resentment towards all the people who should have been there to protect him before he lost his innocence… I didn’t know the handsome action hero had it in him, but I imagine that’s precisely the point!)
“it’s over now, the music of the night” (talk about a nice consolation prize of aiming for Heaven and getting earth thrown in when and how we least expect it, the love of the movie’s other Disney Princess next door, if I’m understanding that scene correctly when she picks up his mask)
and the final random thought, I love that actor who played the noble-hearted rival for the lead girl’s affection… extremely underrated IMO (loved him in Watchmen for instance)

This thread is just too wonderfully Proustian for a midday Friday, tyvm
If it had been poasted any other day of the week I don’t think I would have made it to the 5 pm Friday finish line π

Unironically gorgeous, tyvmft.
To me it evokes a mysteriously comforting vibe of wistfully soldiering on in the journey home, but then being touched by a momentary daydream vision of looking back down across it all, the scope of your mortal life, and being glad you kept going - like in one of those old Tolkienian stories - and really it was more about the fear of what could happen than what actually did happen…
…and then you’re back in the here and now, but somehow a friendly ghost of Everlasting Christmas future has rekindled that nice place to warm our hands by the fire in the Interior Redwall Abbey - and as Tolstoy once said, lovable hippie that he was, “Now see that you don’t forget!”
