as a 20 year old I used to think their stuff was mad interesting and transgressive. As a grown man, it feels so easy to see past the flimsy ironic veneer and into a man that's propelled primarily by genuine hatred and disdain. Most of Sam's shit isn't actually funny to his fans, its just validating. When Sam is going on a forehead-vein-popping tirade about how Indians eat their own shit, its only ostensibly a bit. What he and his fans enjoy is the cruelty of the remarks. When Sam was taking photos of himself putting unsuspecting women at some party in a chokehold where they look like they're in genuine pain, captioning them "the weak should fear the strong", its not comedy, its cathartic glee. The joke is there is no joke.

He taps into the anger and desire for revenge of disaffected failsons so easily because he was one; sensitive boy who lived at home with his single mom until he was pushing 30; couldn't fit in with his progressive, upper middleclass peers at RISD. You can hear it in all the advice he gives on his daddy-surrogate podcast: attention young men, the world is fundamentally rigged against you; women, the blacks, immigrants, they seek to dominate you and as such you should have no qualms about hating them.

All of the above oozes through his work and it makes it impossible for him to make truly good art, he's too driven by his own petty foibles and resentments to make anything of merit.

Playfulness is the key of comedy

Hyde's stuff is funny when it's playful, but to be playful requires having a light spirit.

Otherwise what may be intended as playful comes off as (or simply is) cruelty (see also Nabokov, Kubrick, Haneke)

i like some of sams stuff. I only poasted this because the second paragraph describes BP perfectly and I notice many of sams fans are the same. i like some of his stuff and think he can be funny, so im not saying all are this way.

i agree that sam hyde's brand of humor has largely fallen off though. it's way too self-conscious now. what originally made it funny was them genuinely not giving a fuck and doing the goofiest craziest shit they could think of. now they're adults and completely self-aware about themselves and the world around them and so the same approach to comedy/performance just doesn't work
