Cravath3L debacle.....MY TAKE

Cravath3L never did anything wrong, yet by virtue of him revealing his firm offer, and the existence of dumbasses like pauliewalnutz, he will now have to deal with some serious issues. Even if it's all flame, i guarantee he wishes he had never posted him firm.
No one has linked to a single even mildly racist post of his, and yet if one of the losers does in fact send info to cravath, he will have to answer to them about posting here in general and under their name, as MTG pointed out.
Most importantly, this debacle demonstrates the shitbag rules we call the "outing policy." Fact is, this event, even without a name or personal information being released, could prove to be a million times more detrimental to someones life than a bunch of faggy little babies knowing some hot girls real name. I'm disappointed in GTO for not applying the appropriate rules to this and other similar cases. I hate to admit that I believe that GTO is personally enjoying this event, and believes that it might even draw more attention to his site if this really becomes something (Cravath catches wind). |

I don't see how deleting these threads accomplishes anything positive. So the threads get deleted... if Cravath was emailed, well, deleting the threads isn't going to make those emails go away. And if Cravath wasn't emailed, then deleting/banning serves absolutely no purpose.
Plus, I'm not convinced that emailing firms about actual racists on here isn't a bad thing. Maybe this incident will make people think twice about posting that kind of shit on here. |

What if I'd never posted here before and someone who didn't like me at NYU decided that they'd e-mail some vague threads to my firm, attaching my name and claiming that I was the OP? Should I be worried about this? Without the OP actually posting their own name, these kinds of things are unprovable, and if confronted could be easily denied. I still say that if he really hadn't done anything wrong, then he wouldn't have any reason to worry about being outted. Above all else, this message board is a place for information about LS, firms, etc., and anyone caught posting here could simply cite that as their reason for posting. |

Some of Cravath3L's comments were pretty bad. They might be labled as standard fare for xoxo, but they are the kind of comments that if someone said in real life, people would be very offended. Cravath3L should have known that Cravath would not like it if he made such comments in connection with their firm name.
He has two potential defenses, neither of which are particularly compelling to me. First, he can argue that he was just a schtick. This may be true, but this doesn't change the fact that others might not understand that he was schtick and that this might not lessen the anger that Cravath would feel upon finding out that someone is linking their name with racist/homophobe statements. Second, he can argue that his statements are in line with the type of comments that others on this board make. I don't think this second defense is that compelling either.
Though I disapprove of Cravath3L's actions (and if I were Cravath, I would seriously question his judgment for doing something that would have such a high probability of affiliating the Cravath name with something racist), I also disapprove of the actions of ColumbiaJD and pauliewalnuts. They have set a dangerous precedent: Now, any time that someone here is offended by something that an outed person has said, the offended person might basically be able to seriously mess with the person's life.
I'm leaving this board. I'm leaving because I'm sick of the racism and sick of the fact that it's such a common occurrence that I'm used to it. I'm also leaving, obviously, because I've been outed for a long time. Though I haven't said anything racist, homophobic, sexist, etc., I apprantly have offended people (as well all probably have) and do not wish to be the subject of this kind of sanction.
GTO, I understand your reluctance to turn xoxo into some sort of nanny state. But you may have to come to grips with the fact that you might gain a lot of posters (and prevent others from leaving) by censoring out inappropriate comments. You are not the gov'n. You can censor people (as many other message boards do) without violating the First Amendment. Until you do, you can count me out. Peace. |
