"China" is easy to understand if you look at their recent history

The Cultural Revolution was a total disaster in that it killed off all of China's intellectuals. The people who were in charge of the government immediately after the Cultural Revolution had three things in common:
1. they were hot headed and dumb
2. they knew the cultural revolution was a mistake, because all of China's former allies were asking "why'd you kill our friends?"
3. Mao hadn't killed them yet.
It wasn't until Mao DIED that anyone had the freedom to say "hey, let's get educated and learn how to run a society." 50 years later, here we are. They spent all that time thinking "we're dumb, we need to get smart," and Americans just sat on their asses and watched sitcoms

This is a good book because it was written in the 80s and the author had no idea what China would become. At the same time he gives you daily accounts of what all these Chinese government people were doing, because he was an Indian national
