If initial results from BIGLAW firms are any indication, Michigan students will be living with their parents for most of their life.

to be fair,

the market is going to be in the shittcan indefinitely. ppl that *really* want to be a lawyer should go to law school at a place like Michigan.

I know that runs counter to the cw on this board but it's just a fucking reality. you could wait your whole adult life for this thing to turn around and your opportunity cost won't be very high given your bachelors in art history.

food for thought, broski

if its going to be in the shitcan indefinitely you should at least wait a few years for tuition to be forced down. several years from now law students will pay 10s of thousands less per year if you're right about teh econ.

That's speculative. As is what I'm saying about the economy. It's by no means certain we're going to double-dip or even "soft patch"; it's likewise unclear if a law school education is at all price elastic.

even if we don't get a double dip it'll take a while for hiring to improve to justify that tuition. you'd be foolish to make that bet without seeing hiring return to normal levels for a class ahead of you first.

the student loan system is collapsing and those federal loans will be severely curtailed. most people don't have the money to pay 30-40k a year for law school, period. without the federal loans prices will be forced down.

home prices + mortgage debt levels should've been halted long before they were. that's why they call it irrational exuberance. but once the party's over the price drop is huge.

right. then 90% of law students are foolish, because at most schools you are more likely than not to end up unemployed or in 35k shitlaw in any economy, not just this one

wrong. the job market for lawyers has gotten progressively shittier since the eighties, and despite this, law school tuition has sky rocketed. why, you ask?

tuition is not driven by the supply or even perceived supply of legal jobs. it's driven by the availability of unsecured federally-guaranteed loans. as long as loans are available up to a certain amount, that is the exact amount schools will charge

as long as you dont need a credit check (or bare minimum credit check) for stafford and grad plus, people will keep taking three year vacations and schools will keep charging 40k a year

absent a major, earth shattering rebound in the economy the federal loans' days are numbered in their current size. financial aid will be available, but it will not support ls tuition at the current leve.

Wrong. People that really want to be a lawyer should go to the least expensive school that is ABA accredited. Many many grads of even the best law schools are joining small practices or going solo as the large firms just are not hiring. You really think that non-lawyers (the client) know or even care what law school you went to? They want someone with experience and who will return their calls. Where your law school was ranked matters very little to them.

This is what all the law students forced into publicc interest due to law firm deferrals said. That's a measure of how lost law grads are. One moment they want to make as much money as possible. The next moment they sell out to the good guys because the public interest folks throw a few shekels their way. Law students are lost, have zero core beliefs, have no idea what they are doing or where they are going.

Yeah, but many of the BIGLAW firms from the first day have already done callbacks. Basing future expectations on those results, Michigan is fucked.

At Mich, we could use 30 bids. Generally, most people received 15-18 interviews.

Most people I've talked to who interviewed heavily on Tuesday did not receive a callback, yet. There are some firms that haven't done cb's, but quite a few have and the numbers seem awful.

Thanks. Luckily, I have a job next summer (family connections) and utilized OCI to see what else is out there.

The mood of the students at OCI is definitely more somber today. The upbeat people now seem desperate.

Sure, there is still some hope and anticipation that things will pick up. Everything is based upon info of firms that have done callbacks and the very low number of people that received those callbacks.

I just don't think things are going to end well. Most of the firms I have talked to are still concerned about the fragile economy. The firms have shifted to hiring only what is necessary and keeping workloads high.

this place is truly doing awful, far worse than CCN. NYU placed over 40 in the v10 last year, i think we placed 6?

i don't know what it is - employers not wanting to come to MI when they have good schools in their backyard (CN and to a lesser extent fordham for NYC, C and NW for Chi, etc) or our OCS just not being proactive... but c/o 11 got really fucking hosed, and c/o 12 isn't looking hot.

We shouldn't be comparing ourselves with CCN, but with P/V, or even with DCNG. But even then it seems like we're really underperforming.

Combination of factors. But OCS is really, really not doing anything special.

Sure, my grades suck. Sure, there are not many jobs out there. But OCS has really not made an effort to make things any better. Really pisses me off.

I know Michigan Law graduates who couldn't get any legal jobs at all-- and this was back in the good years of '07 and '08. Even at a "top 10" school the employment numbers are total bullshit. If it makes you feel any better, there are also Penn and UVA students (and Harvard law grads, I know several) who are having just as a hard a time finding salaried legal positions as the Mich people.

i think the frustration expressed in this thread is pointed toward michigan law grads from all corners of the class having trouble, whereas the peopl from HPV are probably all, predictably, somewhere at hte bottom of the class.

Srsly, when Michigan only places 15 in the V10, yet NYU places more than 100, there are problems. And it isn't tha NYU is a better school than Michigan, so that's expected. The disparity should shouldn't be that stark. There were, I think, 3 Michigan 2Ls at V5s last summer. Compare that to NYU: More than 40.

Yes that is understandable. I agree with the poster above who thought it had something to do with where the school is located. Most of the vault firms are headquartered in NYC. So, if they're just taking a small incoming class, it seems reasonable to primarily just recruit from a couple of the elite schools in the NYC area. Michigan just gets screwed since it's not really THAT close to any major market.

Only problem is Michigan's main market is NYC, so performance there is reflective of overall performance, regardless of excuses. If Berkeley did badly, you could say, "well, they didn't want V5 in the first place," but Michigan students do.

yes, they very much do. Also, Cornell's AJF is in NYC, but the still don't do nearly as well as higher ranked schools that are not in the city with respect to NYC. So im not sure it's a geographical thing, or at least that geography is entirely to blame.

IMO:

1) Michigan should hold a job fair in NYC.

2) Michigan's "national placement" is w hat hurts it, since fewer grads placed in NYC leads to fewer alums at those firms who can bat for recruiting for Michigan students.

3) OCS needs to get off their asses and build better relationships with elite NYC firms.

IMO, there are srs problems when an elite law school can seemingly place only 1 student at S&C and 2 at CSM.

McDermott is the worst. They have a history of no-offering Michigan summers, rescinding offers, and laying off first years a few months after starting. The partners are a bunch of cheap ass penny-pinching assholes who won't hesitate to throw you under the bus if they think their profits will temporarily go up.

Google McDermott and you'll see examples of this, from taking away COFFEE at the office, removing the meals at the office that they used to have for late-working associates, salary reductions & freezes, layoffs (stealth as well as mass layoffs), the list goes on and on. The firm gets negative press on a monthly basis on Abovethelaw for the shit they do to their associates.

That firm sucks and don't you forget it. In my opinion, Michigan students would be better off if that piece of shit firm were banned from OCI.

They hold themselves out as a "lifestyle" firm but the truth is they just don't have the client base that many of the other big firms have and associates don't have enough work to make their hourly requirements. Heard it's really stressful there for associates as there is a lot of competition from other associates to get work from partners. No-one wants to be the lowest biller (and fired) so it's insanely cutthroat.

The first-years recently have had it the worst. The second and third year associates do the same work and have better connections, so who do you think is going to get the work? Not to mention senior associates work-hoarding to make their hours and it's just and all-around shitty environment to work in. I know several people who work there and they are all miserable. They'd like to leave but none of the other firms is really hiring laterals right now.

For what it's worth, Michigan is lower on the "grid," or whatever you want to call it, that my firm's HR people give us before we fly out to interview.

I'm not sure if all firm's view Michigan this way, but my firm has the school basically on par with Cornell and GULC. Not that this grid really means anything (I can always call back a sub median person if I REALLLY wanted to), but just something to think about.

We basically have a point system that we fill out after the interview. It has a grades score, interview/personality score and Misc. (diversity) score.

The points we give for grades is based on a grid that has GPA ranges and schools. Michigan is in a group with GULC and Cornell.

This thread sucks. It is a sad day when TLS provides better information than xo.

Michigan was #3 23 years ago. While that should have absolutely no bearing on the status of the school today, shouldn't we have some sweet dude partners pulling hard for the school?

OCS is such a fail, man. They can barely, barely manage getting small firm/more or less solo alums to offer unpaid "internships". Seriously, I bet that they haven't done more than send a mass email to the alum database saying "We have unemployed 2Ls who'll work for free!!!" and still couldn't get more than 3 responses.

Everyone I know with either good grades or mediocre grades & work experience have cbs. It doesn't seems as bad as everyone makes it out to be.

My friends with good grades (3.5+) all have 7-10 cbs and those with mediocre grades (3.2+) all have 3-7 cbs so far, and a lot of the firms haven't made cbs yet so those #s should go up. Of course this is only a sample of 8 people so who knows how representative this is.

I also have friends with less than median grades with 0-1 cbs...

um how do you figure? I just said all my friends with 3.2+ have 3-7 cbs. The ones with 3.5+ simply have a little more.

Proof of bloodbath. Michigan's OCS is so slow that they have time to troll the message boards.

As predicted, and supported by the TLS thread, Michigan students are getting raped. Now to the weather.

As is the case every year, most students with multiple callbacks generally either 1.) don't frequent TLS/xoxo or 2.) don't feel the need to brag/broadcast to the masses. But, whatever makes you feel good about yourself/ding from T10.

UPDATE: Michigan candidates beginning to snap at one another (http://top-law-schools.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=23&t=127740&p=3398206#p3398206). Instead of being angry at the school for financially raping them, students are contemplating exacted homicides to increase their cb spots. More info after the weather.
