The FC is pretty huge—I tried one on and have been thinking about getting one for a while. I told my wife if I decide to get back into the work game, I'd probably go out and get one before interviewing. I love their moonphase Venice model.

I'm partial to the Nomos because it's slick and German like my thundercock. Interesting that Reddit has seized upon that watch in particular. I think I might have heard about it on Watchuseek when I was looking around for nice German watches to ogle.

FC really needs to get their heads out of their asses and start making sensibly sized pieces. Their watches are all really nice looking with classic, dressy designs, but at 42mm and above. Really stupid. Even 40mm is large for their designs.

The thing I'm sad about is that I'd really like to wear one of their legit in-house movements, but none of the styles I like they offer uses it. I think the heartbeat or something uses it, and that's a fucking shit style IMO.

OP, I nearly bought a nice watch but then realized I couldn't tell the difference if someone was wearing a $300 watch and a $3000 piece. Unless youre one of those rare ppl who are actually into watches for watches' sake--they like the movement/history/etc and not just looking prestigious--I'd encourage you to spend your $$ on something else.

A more expensive watch will not improve your life and you will in all likelihood pull the same girls you would've pulled in a Citizen/Timex/etc.

I kind of am like one of those people because I do appreciate watches as art and engineering. I know it won't improve my life but it's just a toy I want. And I really think the difference between a $300 and $300 piece is quite stark: higher grade steel, sapphire crystal vs. mineral, attention to detail, etc.

Cop a vintage speedmaster and a new seamaster. I'm not sure you can get into a decent Rolex sub for 10, but it might be possible with some bargain hunting.

Don't listen to the timex-wearing geeks ITT. Mechanical watches are a lot of fun to own if you can spare the cash and aren't a penny-pinching poor.

If you are deadest on buying new, get an Omega. Your $10,000 will go farther with an Omega, though the Rolex will depreciate less quickly.

I own both, albeit used/vintage. I really like both brands, but I'm partial to Omega because Rolex has a certain prole prestige that can be annoying. Omega is less well known but still highly respected by those in the know.

you can get really nice used Rolexes for a few thousand. If it's been well-maintained, it will still keep perfect time and look great. Plus, nice vintage watches look neat. My Rolex is from the early '60s but still keeps insanely good time (2-3 min a week).

theyre both cool, but Seamaster is the classic look and a good safe bet. Like someone mentioned, i personally would avoid the designs with the overly-gaudy bezels. Also avoid the 007 edition.

EDIT: I love this seamaster design, though I personally prefer white dials and leather bracelet

Obviously rolex and omega have the most prole prestige, but they're still great watches and appreciated by people who also own breguet, Patek, etc

Omega isn't one of those "not well known but well-respected brands". It's pobably the most heavily-advertised luxury brand after Rolex. It's well-respected, but it's basically a jr Rolex that plasters its ads all over golf digest and sporting events perceived as upcale.

I didn't say Omega is "not well known," dipshit. I said it's less well-known than Rolex, which is a fact. Of course Omega is still a well known mass marketed luxury brand.

OP asked about Rolex and omega, so why the fuck do I need to tell him about a Patek or some other ultra luxury brand that's out of his price range?

I'm just saying, you're really not avoiding the sort of prole prestige you mentioned rolex having when you buy an Omega. Many people who know nothing about watches have heard of Omega. So I wouldn't base my decision on Omega being some sort of less obvious choice.

proles will be universally more impressed by rolex. either watch will last forever and look good. pick your priorities.

not like that happens too often. anyone seriously considering a rolex cares about what proles think of their watch, so it's a valid point. the schlub sitting by you in the airport or waiting in line with you at the post office is going to take note of a rolex, because that's what they know. much rarer that they appreciate virtually any other kind of watch.

rolex is a fine watch, but people that want one tend to care about average people noticing their watch. that's the point of rolex.

I just got home from work. The new seadweller has gone under $10k on the grey market for new. If you must buy at an authorized dealer, the Blue/Black GMT seems to be high demand and has the best resale of current new models. You might be able to score a new Daytona for 10k, but it is more like $11k. Sub is fine too. Figure 7500-8k grey new and $8500 authorized dealer new. Milgauss black dial is a nice watch and discontinued but still ~6k new grey market. Check out rolexforums.com

Another option is the tudor blackbay. The blue dial one is nice and $3500. The heritage Chrono is another nice watch.

The only omega I would ever buy new is the classic speedmaster, manual wind with the 1861 caliber. Omega has shit resale value.

No rich guy wears an Omega. Only a geek who makes 100k would.

Don't kid yourself, prolex is the king of 100k millionaire watches. People with actual wealth are wearing Patek and Vacheron, not a watch you can buy at the mall.

Right but you would never see a prole wear a 60k Rolex right?

The only rolexes that cost 60k new have diamonds all over them. Otherwise it's a vintage submariner and is actually cool

Thoughts on Taghauer? There is a self winding dive watch by Tag that I really like. Goes for $3000.

Was thinking of buying it.

Tags are really very expensive for what you get. I mean, if you like it buy it, but I would never spend that much for a Tag.

This is like asking BMW or Mercedes

The answer should be obvious.

Also, my vintage Submariner is still my favorite daily wear.

you should probably stick with a technologically-superior quartz watch and donate that money to an organization that helps mentally ill/homeless veterans or something

or you could keep being a neauvou riche tryhard faggot

My casual watch is a Nomos Club Datum mechanical w/ sapphire back.

For a dressier watch, I'd recommend Omega simply since it's my preference. Mine is their relatively new >15000 Gauss. It's dressy like all Aqua Terras but also has a lot of unique / in-house aspects to it that make it interesting. If your undergrad isn't engineering, buying a Rolex Milgauss or Omega >15000 Gauss is poseur IMO.

Omega if you genuinely appreciate watches and want to make a positive impression on people who are the same.

Rolex if you want to impress proles.
