Let's talk about the religion of anti-racism

1) The proliferation of over-educated young people with bullshit degrees in bullshit studies, who have been peddled critical race theory outside the norms of scientific inquiry in the rest of the academy, yet think their degrees back up their beliefs
2) There was a saying about the Maoist red guard that strikes me as deeply true when I observe these people up close - which is that any political movement which depends on large groups of young people for political support depends on them fighting against the sins of their parents / elders.
3) Political coalitions realigning in terms of values / morals in recent years more so than traditional alignment on economic etc interests. Jonathon Haidt discusses this - how there used to be rural democrats even during / right before Reagan era, there weren't as sharp lines along race / urban vs rural etc
4) Master-slave morality explains a good bit of these dynamics
This all makes sense - but there's still some missing cause I can't quite get my head around - which is how youngsters are indoctrinated into thinking how cool it is to be seen as a good person.... Where did this come from? I understand virtue signalling - it's important to a small degree that I myself think i'm a good person - but what's weird is the degree to which these people depend on external validation for thinking they are a good person.... Is it the decline of religious affiliation? They are segmenting into moral teams to satisfy a moral community itch religion used to scratch but now virtue signalling on twitter does?
I can see some of this stuff explaining society-wide trends, but I can't for the life of me get inside the head of any one individual of one of my friends who are like this and understand why anti-racism is so important to them.
I forgot one major one:
5) Profound ignorance of history - these actions make a bit more sense if they really think their own society / race is uniquely evil, and have never seen a map of the distribution of the transatlantic slave trade, are unaware of what happened to Bosniaks in the former Yugoslav, are unaware at the internment camps today where the Chinese hold Uyghur Muslims in china, are only vaguely aware of what happened to the Tutsi tribe in Rwanda, etc
what the fuck gives? |

Formally, the absence of an ultimate belief allows people to get swept into trendy ideologies because of the empty space.
Substantively, the absence of religion prevents habitual contact with a reality-based feedback function. In Christianity, the cross of Christ works as that reality-based function - the idea is a gruesome death is always possible, and a willingness to undergo it for God's truth is the highest good.
Imitating Christ in that way has 2 pro-social outcomes. First, it teaches that suffering is a primarily personal event. Only in worship does private suffering become public in rejoicing, mourning and commiserating with others, which is commiseration not of moral goodness but of frailty, brokenness and dependence. Second, it teaches that suffering is God-willed, which creates a habit in which the response to injustice is acceptance of God's will, not social vengeance because it is someone's fault. |

All 3 are related. If you're a weak person (and most are) then the top concern is how others see you. You follow the herd, and those leading the herd are now pushing "anti-racism" as the top way to virtue signal. Few have the balls to actually stand up and say "no, this is obviously bullshit and doesn't pass the straight face test and is politics played to ensure Biden wins in November" and if they do then they will be punished.
EDIT: The other thing to understand here is that if you're young, this is basically all you're allowed to do other than stay at home. Either go out to demonstrate, bands playing, looting (pretty fun if you're a teen), etc. or sit at home for yet another day and play on the internet. Protesting orange man is easily the funnest option they have. Otherwise, COVID-19. STAY THE FUCK HOME ... unless you're supporting BLM. So guess what they do? |

It used to be god was perfect and eternal and he would see you through the darkest of the night to the dawn. Now, people "need" something that is "totally and purely good" (i.e, "being anti-racist") to battle against something Totally Evil (i.e, Racism). People need things boiled down to very simple concepts. They used to live for god and denounce satan, now they live to snuff out 'racism' in all its real or perceived forms. |
