2022 numbers, so higher for 2023

https://www.ers.usda.gov/data-products/chart-gallery/gallery/chart-detail/?chartId=76967

U.S. consumers spent an average of 11.3 percent of their disposable personal income on food in 2022— reaching levels similar to the 1980s.

Shouldn't people be eating half or less of what they do? Wouldn't that cut costs? I don't eat over maybe $150 per month max with today's prices

Meanwhile they are spending 30% of income for rent

—-

Climbing rents in recent years propelled US cost burdens to staggering new heights: in 2022, half of all US renters were cost burdened. This all-time high of 22.4 million renter households spent more than 30 percent of their income on rent and utilities.

Couldn't this easily be solved if people just go back to 1985 levels of eating out vs cooking at home

im not sympathetic at all to people who whine about the cost of going out to eat. it was always expensive and superfluous. im more sympathetic to people who are worried about groceries but even most of those people need to learn how to grocery shop its not fucking rocket science. the people who whine about the cost of ubereats or whatever should be handcuffed, blindfolded forced to kneel and shot in the back of the head like the scene at the beginning of the departed.

Many times going out to eat costs the same as what it would cost for you to buy the same shit at grocery store and make it. If you are eating cheap simple meals grocery is still cheaper but for a lot of other shit grocery is so inflated

Sure it is. Try making a pizza from scratch or a good steak meal. You cant even buy all of the ingredients for a burger and fries for less than $15 that you would spend if you just went and bought one in a burger joint

I wonder what it would look like if people ate in/out in 1980s proportions and ate 1980s amounts.
