The history of Dulles, and the CIA at large, from ww2 up through where I am in the book (late eisenhower) is of the most evil organization known to humanity.

all the usual bogeymen - the inquisition church, nazi germany, stalin-era soviet union... even pol pot, isis, etc. These guys would all blush at what the CIA was doing.

short anecdote by way of explanation: CIA was dosing korea in plague and other biowarfare chemicals during the war. Some pilots got captured, and under torture confessed to what they were doing. Pilots get back to USA and the CIA was threatening them with greater torture and treason charges over the confession. So the airmen concocted some wild story about how the koreans gave them brainwashing drugs to elicit "false" confessions. The CIA, of course, knew the confessions were legit, but loved the idea, and began the projects that became mkultra / mind control.

within weeks they had russians they captured in former nazi torture rooms in west germany, dosing them with heroic amounts of lsd while torturing them, literally trying to erase and reprogram their brains. most just died, so they tweaked the chemicals, and then decided, "fuck it, let's try on americans too"
