not DOD, but i have done FBI and USAF FOIA requests. it all depends on the number of pages, and it can take anywhere from a few months to a few years (even if the page difference is minor, like 0-50 pages takes six months and 51-100 take three years). but you'll probably just end up with 99% redacted documents and then will have to sue and fight the asserted exemptions.

There will be several hoops you have to jump through after filing the request. First they'll blindly assert the request is too vague, and you'll have to file an administrative appeal. You'll probably win that, and then they'll take a year to produce heavily censored documents. You'll then have to sue them over the excess censoring

IIRC agency has to acknowledge your request in a short-ish timespan, but that is very different from responding with any substance/records.
