Do famous directors not typically edit?

what about when the director is a producer? most of these big name directors get producer credits. do they still fight with the studios?

The studio will “give notes” to anyone. How much a director and a studio butt heads likely depends 15 different variables, everything from the specific personalities to the amount of financial stress the studio is currently feeling v wanting to maintain relationships and/or chase prestige awards, is the studio just distributing or do they have more stake in it as a production, the stars and their allegiances to either, how marketable the movie is anyway (eg is it a biopic or a bestselling novel with a built in audience or an original screenplay by a no name writer that the director insisted on making as his third installment of a three picture deal), etc, etc.

Cuaron won both in 2014 and Cameron did for Titanic
Screenplay and editing seems unique tho

there are also two two screenwriting awards so relatively easier to win one
curaon has been nominated 3x for screenwriting but hasn't won.
he has nabbed a cinematography oscar but never best picture despite 2x director - all over the place!

why isn't original screenplay considered way more prestigious than adapted screenplay? they're both considered equal in terms of the big 5

scenes are filmed out of sequence for logistical reasons, right?
isn't the "normal" sequence pretty obvious and what's called for in the script... unless it's some weird chris nolan shit?

Screenplay doesn't specify every single cut or timestamp
Check out this scene from JFK "back and to the left" with clips from multiple scenes filmed out of order and multiple audio tracks layered together
If you assume the screenplay or director never instructed edits to this granular level of detail, then you can appreciate how masterful editing made the film much better

Editing requires immense technical proficiency and time spent in post-production
Most Hollywood directors are collecting a paycheck and will bounce to their next project one day after shooting wraps
