The protagonist calls people faggots, there are no non white characters, and Anora doesn’t succeed in the end with a fake happy ending. She’s slapped down and reminded to stay in her place. Her social class doesn’t belong with the billionaire oligarch class and she should be happy for the memory of being able to be in their company in the first place. Marvelously cruel. It left a bad taste in the back of my throat for a minute after the credits rolled. Synecdoche new york type stuff Few of the characters outside of the Mark the Ratslayer type henchmen are given good treatments (the parents are either portrayed as domineering or "flat", and the latter seems to be a worse characterization than the dissolute son's according to the director's sensibilities. Strong oedipal stuff going on with the mom too) and the moral message is pretty clear (and absolutely true): Sex work disempowers and ruins women and creates a sort of disenchantment with womanhood that precludes having a life of decency |
