for an non-repaid signing bonus from 2022. the offer letter never said when i had to repay it, just that it had to be returned. what do i do.

they had been calling me for a year about it.

two routes i'm aware of:

1. negotiate with the collections agency and pay it off asap. ask them to remove the account from your credit report in exchange for paying it off.

2. do nothing (cut all contact) and wait seven years for it to drop off your credit report.

caveat: some jobs (thinking govt jobs in particular) may rescind offers or fire you if they see an account in collections without any effort made to pay it off.

you should try to negotiate the debt with the collections agency. they know it's from XYZ so just from that they know you likely can afford to pay this off and have also likely made some effort to confirm this, which means they probably won't go that low. but you could be lucky.

..but if you have no interest in paying it off then cut all contact so that that 7 year countdown doesn't get reset somehow.

you can set up a payment plan if you don't want to or can't take the hit in one lump sum. but remember to ask for the account to be removed from your credit report in exchange for paying it off.

It’s seven years from when the debt first went delinquent. Collection agencies often “re-age” the debt to keep it on there.
