But I try and mix a little as I go so I can hear what the hell I'm doing. In today's home producer economy it's essential to mix as you go, so layering in sounds should always slip right into something that's on its way to becoming its final version. The One makes everything extremely loud and it only has a couple of buttons. It's good for demos. Better to be overly loud and work on the shittiest of phone speakers than be too quiet for anyone to understand what you're trying to accomplish.
I am such a control freak that even though I don't really know how to mix I send mixing engineers a sample mix to go off of. My #1 complaint is when other people have their own ideas. I am expressly against anyone else having any sort of personal opinion or creative control of any kind so when I collaborate I refer session players and engineers to my examples so they don't start thinking for themselves. The biggest thing that will ruin a project is a lack of vision. In essence, having taste and a concrete vision of any kind is the most essential production skill. I may not exactly know how to cut together 4 different guitar tones with unique individual EQs into a single composite but I can at least point to a track that already exists and tell a producer or an engineer, hey, this is the sound I'm going for. Essential skill. |

Yeah I’m controlling too. Control over the vision is what makes being in a band hard. Lots of artists painting on the same canvas. |

Kurt Cobain just showed up and presented the songs to the other guys. One was his best friend who had minimal talent and was along for the ride, and the other guy was a drummer who was hired cash money from the record label after the group was already famous. Plus he was generationally talented and impressionable and easygoing. So yeah there were hardly ever any bands even back in the day. You might have luck in a subgenre like active rock, metal, or country. You would have to become really famous and it's better if you're a singer with a pretty face. From what I can recall 90s effects processors were not good. I already have a computer I don't know why I'd get a decades old computer.
I'll tell you which way the industry is going though. Everyone is gonna go to plugins. Every pedal and effect company is going to make a plugin version of their effects. Everything is going digital. Every pedal that exists will become a plugin if it hasn't already. |

There's not a big difference between models. I probably like the thinner neck of the J bass with the tone of the P bass. For certain styles you need a Stingray though. Use case is going to be clean tones, indie rock, surf rock, and vintage applications. Not that you can't turn the gain up to 11 and rock out. You can. You can pretty much do anything on any guitar. It's got a cool vibrato bar that adds character. I probably wouldn't get one for metal. If I had one I would get one with the rhythm circuit just for the novelty aspect, and then I would tell people who had Jazzmasters that don't have a rhythm circuit that they aren't real Jazzmaster players for maximum snobbery. If I'm gonna get a funky guitar I want all the quirks and novelties. Get one with binding and a headstock that matches the body. Go all in and tell everyone you're in a surf band called The Magnetoes. I don't know. Do whatever you want this is guitar advice not life advice. Poor one out for grandma. Or don't.
