Even within the combat arms, people who are in the know have a sense that a Bronze Star (even with Valor) can be illegitimate when it is held by some staff officer weenie who came under mortar fire.
I would generally have much more respect for a 20 year enlisted SF guy than a general officer with the same tabs and medals.
But the right isn't immune to pushing their military service kind of obnoxiously either - i.e., Greitens. |

Liberals require figureheads and thought leaders; they create fields like “feminist studies” or “African American studies” out of thin air for the sole purpose of insulating themselves from reality, knowing deep down that facing reality would destroy their ideology. But a life of navel-gazing is fundamentally unfulfilling, so they have to cry louder about more asinine events to simulate meaning in their lives.
The combat arms breaks that cycle. It forces men to confront reality. When you’re there, with your life on the line, you’re forced to think about what purpose your life even has, and what you’re fighting for. Nobody comes back from that and thinks, “this collective temper tantrum against made up micro-aggressions is a good use of my life.” |

What I’m saying is that the nature of the work done by the military, and the experiences of those in the military, create an underlying current that runs against the fundamental appeal of liberalism.
I don’t believe that the combat arms are an inviolate temple of conservative ideology. I think you have the causality reversed. The combat arms is the highest stakes game people can play, and things like personal responsibility, self sufficiency, competence, and sacrifice (values which don’t sit well with the modern liberal movement) are necessary and extremely highly valued within the community. I don’t think the combat arms inculcates Soldiers with conservative ideology, but Soldiers do get to experience first hand why the above listed traits have been so highly prized throughout history.
As a general rule, the more elite and combat oriented a unit is, the more conservative the politics of the people in the unit. It’s not because they recruit conservative people. |

But the point I'm trying to make is that this little side-battle is a loss no matter how its framed. It makes the military look worse (i.e., what's the point of serving if no sacrifice is honored by the Right). It also slightly pushes the needle towards the Left as seemingly like the flag-waving, vet-defending party.
The battle in America is for the middle of the boat normies who are easily led and care a lot about the Optics. For the Right to only have guys like Trump and Tucker firing off at the hip at everything is a sign that the battle is being lost. Where is the Right's version of Tammy Duckworth being able to criticize her? Where is a nuanced criticism that actually gets to the substance of her comments rather than just "she hates America", "fuck that Gook"
