Nah, it isn't the CPU that is different (though, Xbox's is clocked higher), it is the GPU. 52 compute units on the Xbox vs 36 compute units on the PS5. Sony attempts to make up for some of that gap by allowing them to overclock but that's unsustainable and Sony knows that. So comparing Sony's *peak* performance to Xbox's regular, you see 18% weaker on the GPU. Sustained? Even worse. 256-bit RAM in PS vs 320-bit in MS. |

We don't know how 10 vs 12 teraflops translates into real world performance until we have some multiplatform games to benchmark. For example, if neither system can sustain 4k60 and they therefore target 1080p60 instead, it doesn't matter if one is hitting 62fps and the other 68fps.
You seem to understand this point when it comes to comparing SSD throughput. It is also true with respect to GPU and CPU throughput. If the additional bandwidth doesn't enable meaningful differences in the player experience, who cares which machine scores higher on a synthetic benchmark? |

Anyone who does this knows that a weaker graphics card is the most likely to result in quickly visible results. That's what's going on here.
Now, I will say that if Microsoft does a reveal and it looks similarly dogshit then Sony wins by default. |

But 99% of games I will play through once (sometimes don't even finish) and never touch again. Game pass is a much better model because I play what I want and every once in a while, if I really love the game I'll buy it. But generally, I'll play the game and move on to another one.
Ask yourself this - how many games that you bought 5 years ago to you actually dust off and play? 3 years? 1 year? Then Game Pass makes a ton of sense. |
