Yes I think it's "reasonable" although not "ideal" to respond to hatred, warfare, economic destruction etc with the same and indeed this is even a tenet in the tanakh or what Christians call (part of the) Old Testament. Ideal pulls a lot of work in that sentence there.

Afaik Israel jumped the gun because Netanyahu needed meat to throw to his base to keep the permanent state of emergency and expansion of executive powers going and this has very predictably (to everyone but Netanyahu) ended up causing more blowback and resentments towards Israel while making it less likely that they get a preferable deal in the region than they would have had they just gone along with the long standing CIA/DIA/DoS/DoD plans for the region. What they will likely get now---at the cost of American power in the region, goodwill towards Israelis and Jews across the world, and what's looking like another wave of Libyan spring type anarchy in Syria, Iraq, and now Iran---is a geopolitical situation far more muddled, fractitious, and hostile than what existed prior. Great for terrorizing your nation's public into voting Likud and keeping Jewish-Islamist relations exploitably abysmal but obviously horrible for Israeli QoL and Jewish strategic safety across the globe.

Generally what Likud has been doing to the Israeli public is fairly abusive, not dissimilar from (hmm the irony) the Nazi domestic propaganda techniques regarding radio-led "constant readiness" drills to keep a far away enemy psychologically ever-present, and of that specific flavor of authoritarian where the authority denigrates its own potentas by virtue of visibly not putting the interests of its subjects before those of the ruling cabal. Israel under Netanyahu has come to resemble a battered wife, histrionic and irrational, easily led about by base, primal emotions whipped up by the domestic tactic of constant air raid sirens and bunker drills, a situation where the Israeli public are animated by fear of a projected rape from next door rather than the rape that's been going on at home. This has generally been part of Likud's fairly scummy and arch "deep state" "strategy of tension" that incidentally started becoming a thing after the assassination of Yitzhak Rabin, a center-left reformer and proponent of what were at the time very popular US led accords in the region, and it's done quite a bit to damage both Israeli diplomatic posture while also exhausting and burning through a lot of US good will and fellow-feeling in the process.

3. The median Palestinians in Palestine have, at minimum, a fair and sensible argument and historically I've penned more to make space for it than most Progressives have. Their treatment is abysmal and the whole thing is an atrocious mess that has no clear compromise that will leave both parties feeling satisfied. The best route out is probably going to be a Kissinger-esque agreement that will leave everyone equally unsatisfied and united in their newly found dislike of the mediator.

Juxtaposed, the "big tent Progressives" agitating for Palestine in the US have no such thing and have done an immense amount to degrade both the purity of the Palestinian cause as well as to infect and pollute the Palestinian mission with all sorts of Western degeneracy and what the pan-Islamist Sayyid Qutb called the "political schizophrenia of Western democracy."
