No shit, when our brilliant SCOTUS decided that state funded single gender military schools were unconstitutional on the basis of a previously unknown constitutional standard (also, there is no real difference between women on a physical or mental level), a forseeable result was that The Citadel, enrollment 2k, had to immediately create a bunch of women's sports to comply with Title IX (and, of course, drop a bunch of men's sports). However, amazingly, not a lot of women were excited to go The Citadel (not a lot of men were/are all that excited about going to The Citadel either). So, long story short, in the late 90's, any woman who wanted to go to The Citadel could go on a full scholorship if they wanted to play volleyball. Many of these girls who took this offer up had never played volleyball before, and the average height of the team was 5'3 - playing in a D1 conference. If any members of the corps showed up to the games, it was to usually heckle the female cadets and ogle the unbelievable display of beauty that is a non-Citadel female volleyball player. As I understand it, in 1998, they did to win a game, and only won 4 sets(!) the entire season - it had to be the worst showing of any D1 school in any sport of all times. The sad part was that, this was such a miserable life, the vast majority of these girls dropped out of school, and the school would simply offer another full scholly to another woefully under-deserving female to comply with US v. Virgina (VMI case) and title IX who would be likely to drop out and be worse off for the experience.

I find it hard to believe that any daughter or son of mine won’t be exposed to kids who take all sorts of lessons in all sorts of things in these overscheduled times to never know the existence of these activities. Hell people tell me I’m behind because my 2 year old hasn’t started swim lessons yet. My friend’s 3 year old asks his mom why he isn’t in a toddler soccer class (my friend is legit middle class PhD student and doesn’t want to spend the money).
If anything I’m worried about my kids having too many options and thinking they can do 100 different things when I want them to pick a few things and stick to them. |

It taught her discipline, grace, artistry, and got her in great shape. It gave her an eating disorder. She heard a lot more about sex (especially homosexuality) than she should’ve at a young age due to lots of older girls in the same changing room. It’s a little like gymnastics in that to reach the highest levels you do need a certain body type.
I’m agnostic about what to do with a daughter, wife definitely for ballet. But any physical activity where they get off their phones will be good. |
