I think for me as I got older I became less tolerant of people with alternative lifestyles and arrangements. This stems mostly from an old friend I had whom is now deceased, but before he passed he went down the road of pimping. I witnessed a guy who had obtained a lot of power over several women in his life, and what I found is his behavior to me was immoral and wrong. my thoughts on why this happens in america specifically is our focus on individualism and aversion of collectivism. business regulations are a perfect example of this. when the debate happens, all you hear is one side saying "more regulations!" and the other saying "less regulations!" but how many of them even know w hat they're talking about specifically? the truth is that the whole scheme is fucked and the people the build, maintain, and operate it have incentives to keep it that way. commonly people will think "more regulations" will hurt big business, but i've seen it increase compliance costs in a way that disproportionately favors big business such that it makes it impossible for others to compete.

europeans are much more receptive to collective action through laws and regulation. when that's your starting point, then a debate can emerge about what those regulations should be. but a significant portion of the US starts with "ZERO REGULATION" and a significant starts with "MORE REGULATION", and the debate never gets to "what ARE the regulations?", which provides fertile ground for elites and toadies like me to grift.
