About 60k in debt at CLS.

Another 80k (apparently...recently informed by parents it is mine when I graduate LS) in debt for a T15 undergrad degree (poly sci-type of degree).

Current grades at CLS: B, B, B+, B+

Three grades still out, but probably similar. I feel like the goal of working in BIGLAW is ending...should I just hedge my bets now and drop out before taking on even more debt?

It's pretty sad. I owned undergrad and thought I would do well in LS, too. I guess I thought wrong. I don't know what to do at this point.

Indeed. I mean, the overall plan was pretty vaguely put to me when I entered: father told me I would have to pay for the rest of the debt at some future point, I was not told what was that debt throughout college, and was recently informed how much it would be (80k) and when I would take it myself (post-LS). Obviously, it is in their name, so I have no legal obligation to undertake it, but I would do so, being the good child that I am. I don't want them paying that until they die.

didn't get one. But I also didn't mail in August like I should have because OCS told me I would be fine. I mailed too late and the firms had already finished hiring. Your GPA is better than mine, I think CLS does a tad bit better than NYU, and I had a terrible resume.

You should consider doing something interesting that will let you have the loans forgiven, even if non-law related. Foreign service (I am aware this is hard to get, given the test) would be ideal.

I was under the impression that the entirety of the loan was forgiven. So, if you start in the program two or three years from now, after ten years the interest accrued in the two or three years of minimal payments would also be forgiven. Correct?

I have asked these types of questions, not only about law school but other shitty things that were not working out for me ..

After all these years, I feel that, whenever you're asking this type of question "should I drop out?" "should I quit this job?", etc., usually you already know you should, you just feel bad about the time and money you already spent ...

Fucking drop out. I had met kids who dropped out of LS after first year, I kinda thought they were losers and quitters, but in hindsight, they had the maturity to decide what was in their best interest, never mind what other kids, their parents were telling them ...

But, as the situation stands, you already owe 100K. You will be up to 230ish when you graduate. I say you see it through. Columbia gives you a shot. As much as I know that is a joke, I am one of the few people who would actually have no qualms moving abroad and simply not paying. I've lived abroad so often in the past that it would not be a big deal for me.

The only issue is that I would not want to stick my parents with the undergrad debt when they are retired. That is their time to relax. I'd feel too guilty.

I hear you. It's a tough situation. You seem like a cool dude who just wants to do the right thing. If you dont hate law school, or you wont hate being a lawyer, then stick it out. Hussle your ass off, and get something that helps you pay of the 80 grand. Then, either try the IBR thing or leave the country. While Africa was said in jest, leaving the country and not paying back the rest of your loans is the way to go. Especially if you enjoy living abroad. Stay off the grid. Be well.

If I can get a gov job, yeah. This is a way to have the LS loans forgiven. It wouldn't do anything for the 80k in undergrad, though.

I just don't know if I would enjoy law enough to want to work at 40k/yr for the gov for ten years while using all my disposable income to pay off the undergrad loans and maintaining this sort of job in order to have the loan forgiven (and passing up any jobs that come along that might be more lucrative because of the rules of LRAP or gov. forgiveness). I mean, if I am going to make 40k a year for that purpose, I would much rather go to Asia or something and make 30k/yr doing an easy job like teaching English.

yeah. but the CLS degree might come in handy at some point in the future.

i think people are being short-sighted. getting a bigtime credential like that is a once in a lifetime thing. ITE is warping people's perceptions. life is long, and you don't know what will happen in the future -- who knows, Obama could forgive all loans.

i see a lot of people "outsmarting" themselves these days.

if the economy truly tanks, well, we are all fucked, and it will make little difference anyway what debt you have. if it doesn't tank, we'll all be kicking ourselves for the "prudent" choices we've made.

If this is true, and you're committed to hustling the fuck out of the system (something I dont gather you are from your prior posts), the time is now. Start networking like crazyi in your secondary markets.

THIS YEAR, I saw people with mediocre grades from far shittier law schools get secondary posts in my market. Granted, anecdotes don't go far when you see median kids at CLS or NYU strike out but the point is that you can make your own luck outside of OCI.

Stop listening to XOXO and their chicken little bullshit. Your polisci degree wont get you shit. Your JD will. Give it time.

No, of course not. I do the e-mail stuff pretty often, to be fair. I have some connections I have used to get general advice in the state's main city, and that has been helpful; I have kept in touch with those people pretty consistently throughout 1L. I went to all the firm events hosted around my school, and I am participating in a few different programs this summer that are meant to create greater 'ties' between certain firms and CLS students. I do all of that. I should probably browse websites and cold e-mail people, too, I guess. I haven't tried that unless I have 1. met the person or 2. been referred to the person by someone I know.

See above explanation. Rents told me to go to the top school that accepted me. Told not to worry about the debt. Would be minimal. Did so. Completely owned at the school. Told the debt would be around 80k when I finally took it.

So, in other words, my parents actually took out a lot more than 80k to pay for it and are paying it down TO 80k, when I will take it.

In a nutshell. The idea that a state school would not be good enough was also indoctrinated during my private school days while a high school student, too.

To be fair, my state's system is pretty crappy, though. I did get SOME money at my priv, but a very minimal amount. Plus, the rents had to pay for my sister's private university, too.

LRAP makes it so attending law school can be practically free. Don't bitch and carry on. You have no other prospects as a TTT polisci major in a shitty economy.

If you don't get biglaw, do JAG or public interest for 5-10 years. Stay fit, have meaningful relationships, and enjoy life. You may even be better off for it.

maybe so, but dude's odds aren't that long and scary compared to many. people balance mortgages, loans, CC debt, kids, and all kinds of other shit. being a single guy with a columbia JD and just school debt isn't the end of the fucking world. only the aspie XO mentality equates this with failing at life.

a T6 law degree is still valuable and will take you somewhere good if you actually want to practice law - that's not just hallmark shit, it's true. like i said, very few people stick with it end up fucked over.

The legal market was not nearly as saturated/competitive then. Most of those extreme TTTs probably aren't retired and new lawyers are being created far faster than new legal work. When people whose school/grades puts them in the top 5% of all law students can't get jobs coming out of school, you know the field is fucked.

Not many T6 people with decent grades are getting shut out. If they are, they're targeting like shit or interview like shit. Legal market used to be a lot easier, but it was still a hustle and a TTT was still a TTT. XO fosters a perverted view where law used to be wide open and jobs were awarded like party favors at graduation.

How many people above median at schools 4-18 are getting shut out? Shitloads, and those people are all easily in the top 5% of law students. In fact, as you creep down towards 18 it's probably the norm to be shut out unless top quarter or better. And even among those who don't get shut out, there are the newly introduced minefields of mass no-offers, deferrals, and rescinded offers. That is fucking bullshit. There is no other profession where going to a school in the top 10% of schools and outperforming the majority of people there leads to such shitty outcomes.

This is obvious flame of the crazy people on this board who think only top 1/4 at HLS gets biglaw right now. Hypothetically, 3 B+s and no B-s is about 80% to get biglaw at fall OCI. And assuming the economy continues in +GDP territory for the year I would guess 3L OCI would be atypically doable at Columbia in 2011, especially if you take the right courses and manage to pad your GPA up to have a chance at Stone one year.

Also, coming from Columbia you have so many more options. Say you want to do Entertainment law--intern at an entertainment firm/company for a year or two in law school, make connections and you have a very realistic chance to break into a practice area that's virtually impossible to get from, e.g., Texas, Cornell or Georgetown.

Now if all the rest of you people seemingly taking this guy seriously are actually pretending/flaming back, then I'm impressed, although you should've been funnier.

C'mon we're all assholes to each other here. It's what we do. I'm just trying to shake you up a little, and on this board that means I have to go to 11. Also I suspect it's possible that you're median at M/V/P/B and trolling. If you're actually a median student at CCN and you're trying this hard to feel bad about yourself, you should strongly consider not being a lawyer (but in most cases you should still finish law school). It's much more likely that you're dreading the work/lifestyle than the debt burden and you just aren't ready to admit it to yourself. 20 years from now you'll feel retarded that you wasted your 20s crying yourself to sleep every night over an extra 50K of student loans running 5ish% interest.

Bottom 3rd at NYU should be worried that they won't get biglaw (though it's not like you shouldn't even bother with OCI). Cultivate a specialty/niche and related contacts over 2L/3L year including an internship/work outside of school. You're a grown up. Figure out something you want to do, focus on that, network and work hard. Don't be a little whiny bitch and expect your teacher to pat you on the head and give you a gold star to make everything better.

Networking doesn't = going to dumbass cocktail parties at the law school for people who are interested in practicing in X geographic location. It means a) figuring out what you want to do, b) preparing to talk to people in the field so that you can ask them smart questions and demonstrate that you're serious, c) be willing to volunteer to work for free for the right person/firm/company in order to learn how to do it, up to and including for a year after LS. My friends who did this in LS are the people who have the best jobs now.

I can't worry about that at this point, though. Ironically, three years ago was the summer I used to study for the LSAT while working part-time as a cashier.

See what happens at EIP in August. Your next tuition payment isn't due until September, so you can re-evaluate then. But it's probably not worth it to drop out unless you have something else great lined up already.

you're looking for every excuse to cut bait and run.

i suspect you'll find that your polisci degree will give you precisely a 0% chance at landing a decent job, whereas your law degree gives you a far higher likelihood depending upon how hungry you are.

stop fucking around.

I did have a job with the poly sci degree. Didn't pay much, but I did enjoy it.

I give up. I have nothing more to offer you. You seem weak willed; I'd suggest you cut your losses since it seems like you don't have the moxy to make it work anyhow.
