Proles use the federal reserve's current basket of consumer goods in their mental model of inflation

even going by fed numbers, grocery inflation is higher than 20%. they probably used the broader CPI that includes non-grocery items

Definitely the latter. I overheard two diesel mechanics getting to the 120 figure but that was with hedonic adjustment and substitution effects

I noted that too. At that very least they kept the numbers small and only included groceries so it didn't sound as bad. I've heard numbers more like people are paying an extra $1500 a month for expenses b/c of gas, groceries, utilities, etc.

This. Even as a dad of 5 an extra 20% in groceries in my prole mind didn’t even resonate. In my random stock account some days I’ll be up 10% so I don’t care. Plus I put my phone number in at checkout and get 10% off.

But the latter you mentioned is worse.

Can attest to that groceries are notably more expensive in the US than even the UK.

I think those countries subsidize grocery countries. I believe that's the case in France and Switzerland, where groceries are way cheaper than the US and obviously better. But Swiss restaurants are expensive AF.

Which is the way it should be. Cheap supermarkets, expensive restaurants so dining out is an occasional treat and you eat well, not slop.

In the US it's expensive supermarkets, comparatively cheaper dining out where you eat endless slop.
