Anna Kournikova is up there. A decent enough player who was hot as fuck and peaked in skill (and looks) during the personality vacuum that popped up post Seles/Graf and before the Williams sisters. Her fame is solely due to impeccable timing and a great ass.

she's odd in that virtually every player who reached her singles ranking (8 iirc) managed to win at least one tournament. so maybe she was unlucky or maybe she didn't have the psychology to win solo.

yes she's an odd case. she was a top junior singles player. her failure to win a wta singles title is most likely mental midgetry. but that doesn't mean she sucked.

she certainly had talent and at many times proved she didnt suck. check out this tourney where she beat davenport, seles, conchita martinez and sanchez-vicarrio all in the same week:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1998_Lipton_Championships_%E2%80%93_Women%27s_singles

she beat all those players and then came up against penis in the finals. that's certainly unlucky. that performance should be good enough to win most tourneys.

you're conflating fame as a celeb versus fame on her tennis prowess. she's less respected as a tennis player bc she was hot and everyone wrongly makes fun of her for being "terrible" bc she never won a singles title.

Stockton did all the work. He drew in a double team opening up Malone, whipped him a pass and he hit an open mid range or dunk. His career is a complete fraud and i can't even believe people actually think he's on Barkley's level.

Derek Fisher was a PG who couldn’t play PG. Mediocre distributor and poor defender. Ends up in a Phil Jackson offense (which doesnt use a traditional PG) and gets to operate as a pressure release for two of the top 50 players of all time in Shaq and Kobe. He could shoot wide open 3s.

He played for 18 seasons, won 5 rings with the Lakers, and succccccked any time he wasn’t in LA with that offense. If any other team had drafted him he probably wouldn’t have seen a second contract in the league.

Eli Manning has a great case for this. He's going to get in the HOF and is a 2x Super Bowl MVP and a legend for beating Tom Brady twice.

But if it weren't for 2 ridiculous catches, he'd have 0 Super Bowl wins, 0 great teams (his super bowl teams had a 10-6 and 9-7 record), a career .500 record, and only ever led the league in INTs.

Throwing out a couple of more names:

Madison Bumgarner - he's actually got better regular season stats than i remember, but i think you could argue he was lucky to have his best stretches appear in the World Series

Matt Flynn - started last game for Green Bay, ran up the score against an awful Detroit team, and got himself a $20 mm contract (a lot at the time) from Seattle...

Flynn is a really good one. That contract was based on more than the one game though - he had also looked amazing for several preseasons in a row and was widely thought of as being starter-ready but for being behind Aaron Rodgers.

Turns out he just knew how to flex on backups. He couldn’t even beat out Terrelle Pryor in Oakland.

A hilarious follow-up to this is that he went to Seattle and sucked, went to Oakland and sucked, but then when Rodgers got hurt in 2013 both of their backups were horrible, so they just brought Flynn back and he was good again and got them into the playoffs.

Lebron is the example of something else. He has natural gifts that are probably the highest in NBA history. So his giftedness:accolades ratio is nothing outrageous.

Matter of fact, it probably goes the other way. He should have won so much more, and closed the argument on GOAT persuasively. Jordan with Lebron's body would have won 10 championships

The Dwight Howard hate is such retarded flame. Guy put up MVP level numbers for like 5 or 6 seasons and was DPOY 3 consecutive years. He's a lock for the HOF.

He was extremely effective. He gets shit on now for a few reasons: 1) shaq doesn't like him 2) offensive game lacked aesthetics 3) couldn't make free throws 4) lame personality.

Here's the thing. Dwight was so physically gifted that he was a man amongst boys as soon as he entered the league as a teenager. He's also kind of dumb and lazy, so he didn't do anything other than stay in shape to continue to be a dominant NBA player not realizing that maybe he should diversify his offensive arsenal.

Then he got injured (before going to LA) and his physical prowess diminished and he didn't have the skills to pivot his game to still be as effective into his 30s like Shaq, Kareem or Dream. Since he came into the league straight out of HS, he still had almost a decade of all nba level seasons.

you have to grind in most individual sports, but golf has lots of inherent randomness. golf majors are way more random than, say, tennis. plus the fact that all the 4 majors are in like a 2.5 month period means that someone peaking at the right time can get lucky and rack up several.

partially agree. hard to call padraig lucky to win. he was the best those weeks. he also prepared for those british opens differently than other players which worked out obviously so seems smart rather than lucky.

otoh the two in ‘08 were when tiger was out after breaking his leg or whatever at the us open he won at torrey pines. i suppose that’s lucky the same way chris dimarco was unlucky in that he might have a masters and british open if tiger was injured when he had solo 2nds in those

? he was great in majors, bunch of top tens. twice runner up at the masters. a couple 54 hole leads he didn’t convert. he was in contention a lot, won some other tournaments too. and this was back when tiger was in his prime as were a lot of other really good players. those two us opens were not out of nowhere.

better “lucky” two time us open winner answer would be andy north. only one other tour win. he wouldn’t even have won the second open in 85 by todays rules and it’s debatable that the two shot penalty assessed to denis watson(who finished a shot back) was correct in the first place

Charles Martin

Totally unremarkable fighter who got to be heavyweight champ of the world.

In 2015, after beating Wlad Klitschko, Tyson Fury was ordered to fight Vyacheslav Glazkov to defend his IBF World Title. Fury instead vacated the belt. Glazkov was then ordered to fight Charles Martin for the vacant belt. In the 3rd round, Glazkov slipped and tore his ACL preventing him from continuing and resulting in a TKO victory for Martin who then was KOd in his next fight against Anthony Joshua.

agreed. i didnt say he's the worst. and he's not even close to the worst. he just got extremely lucky somehow destroying a tough field. and 17yo's usually dont win slams.

i'm just saying his RG title is extremely lucky given the tough field he faced

Gastón Gaudio never sniffed a grand slam until 2004 RG when he had an insanely easy draw after Federer's shock upset, only faced 2 barely seeded players until the Finals, then he was getting his ass kicked and down 2 sets to 0, only came back because opponent happened to be his best friend who probably felt bad kicking the shit out of him

Rich Gannon also jumps to mind. He was a career backup who suddenly became a Pro Bowler and one-time MVP at almost exactly the same time that he got to throw the ball to Jerry Rice. Now that you mention it, Joe Montana and Steve Young could also be part of this conversation for the same reason, but Gannon was far more egregious. Eli Manning is still a better pick, though.

Montana was in the right place at the right time and was the right kind of QB to run the west coast offense, which took some years for defensive coordinators to solidify schemes and obtain players to effectively deal with.

You could also say that Rice, who was not incredibly fast, benefitted more than a little by catching balls from Montana and Young.

They both benefitted from having dudes like Ronnie Lott murdering people on a weekly basis.

argument to be made for B.D. Nick Foles

probably shouldn’t have gotten serious consideration as a starting qb but was immediately playing behind an injury-prone Vick. around the time he’s headed to the trash heap early career, chip kelly comes on and has some gimmicky shit that helps Foles look like maybe he’s great. has that 7 td game, just a few games where he looks like he has promise. he actually sucks but just enough notoriety to keep getting qb2 gigs.

then inexplicably goes on an insane run in the playoffs after wentz goes down. remember, foles looked like absolute shit in that regular season. super bowl comes, philly special, unsustainable throw after unsustainable throw, beats brady & gets SB MVP. forever a hero, immortalized for that one run. also got him paid (and he went right back to being sps)

great thread btw

Jeter’s level of individual talent did not warrant a season long farewell tour and almost unanimous HOF induction.

People go too far and try to say he was a bad baseball player. It’s absurd. But he has GOAT level accolades and was never close to being the best player in the league in any season. A lot of this is purely from being on a historically great yankees team.

3 top 5 finishes i think. but you are right, i went a bit too far saying he was never close to being the best player in the league when clearly he was right up there for a few years and had a lengthy and consistent career.

Maybe his objective stats plus his intangibles like leadership and clutch moments make his deification reasonable.

Am I the first one to say Tim Tebow? At one point, something like 40% of football fans believed that his success in the NFL was due to divine intervention when you look at the number of games he won despite the obvious lack of talent.

I think Tebow was unlucky in a lot of ways.

He led his team to the playoffs, won a playoff game, then lost to Tom Brady (who hasn't). He's annouced as the presumptive starter for the next year, but the Broncos sign Peyton Manning - and then he's traded never to really get a shot at QB agai.

Yeah he couldn't throw - but neither could Lamar Jackson or Jalen Hurts. Seems like he might've gotten more of an opportunity to run a 2025 style offense and he came 10 years too soon.

"In 1993, he recorded 63 tackles and 11 passes defensed (tied for second on the team). In 1994, he tallied 57 tackles, 4 interceptions (third on the team) and 12 passes defensed (tied for third on the team). The 1995 season would be a great season for Brown, recording six interceptions, returning two of them for touchdowns and recording 47 tackles, en route to the Cowboys reaching and winning Super Bowl XXX, in which he earned MVP honors with two second half interceptions, which the Cowboys converted into two touchdowns to prevent a Steelers comeback.[4]

Oakland Raiders

Brown became a free agent immediately after his Super Bowl MVP performance and used his award as leverage to sign a lucrative contract (five years, $12.5 million with $3.5 million guaranteed) with the Oakland Raiders on February 20, 1996.[5] In 1997, he was demoted to a backup role and suspended four weeks by the team for "conduct detrimental to the team".[6] On June 3, 1998, he was waived after being a disappointment and playing only 12 games (one start) in two years for the Raiders.[7] Brown is believed to be one of the NFL's biggest free agent busts in NFL history."

his two superbowl interceptions had nothing to do with skill and everything to do with luck
