no, this happens regularly at many schools. sometimes they have overenrollment for various factors and defer students. atl is just hyping this because of the "ite" factor.

Schools defer people AFTER admitting them? I've never heard of this. I've heard of people voluntarily deferring a year after being admitted, but I've never heard of schools pushing for deferments. If it happens with any regularity, it's news to me.

yes, happens all the time. happened at my school a couple of times--admit students, too many matrics, offer $$$ to keep the class size contained.

How TTT. My school has over admitted, but they just sucked it up and had a larger than intended class size for that year.

Couldn't situations like these be better resolved with more judicious use of a waitlist?

probably, but it doesn't always work out. you get an admissions staff that does the usual thing, but then there's some kind of shift--a hot basketball or football program, a weather catastrophe, economic up or down, notable administration change, scandal--and it can swing admissions.

also, there's a bit of a stigma with wl, some people may just give up if wl'ed and can't wait to see what happens.

it's really not a big deal. i know people at several schools this has happened to. it's pretty quiet usually--only a handful, after all, and it's only a year. excecpt atl likes to hype shit.

miami's program is a little funny, though, because it's mostly chances for $$$ and a few little odd bonuses. the people i talked to received some real $$$ for a "voluntary" deferral. basically a bribe, but just a nice scholarship boost. miami applicants should definitely take it ite. much better choice--wait out a year, make some $$$ delivering pizzas or whatever, get a boost in financial aid, and come out hopefully a year later and closer to economic recovery.

I know people this happened to with Chicago pre-ITE--they got a letter saying something like "We don't have a place for you in the fall of 2005, but if you are willing to enter in the fall of 2006," etc.

hint: Miami is a trash heap that is absurdly lucky to be the only remotely worthwhile school within hundreds of miles of its desirable market.

I went to ASU when Patricia White was the dean there. She is now the new dean at Miami.

Sorry, Miami. You got screwed.

She's not a good fund raiser. She doesn't seem to care much about improving in rankings. She seems to have a massive soft spot for AA.

"While I would like to believe that this year's elevated acceptance rate reflects the great sense of excitement about the Law School and its future that led me to become its new Dean, I fear that some of it may be related to the shortage of jobs in the current economy. Perhaps many of you are looking to law school as a safe harbor in which you can wait out the current economic storm.

If this describes your motivation for going to law school I urge you to think hard about your plans and to consider deferring enrollment. Law school requires an enormous investment of work, energy, time, and money. It is very demanding intellectually and emotionally. Beyond this, in these uncertain and challenging times the nature of the legal profession is in great flux. It is very difficult to predict what the employment landscape for young lawyers will be in May 2012 and thereafter."

More Law Schools should be this upfront to admits/students/"pre-law" students.
