Does working there during a summer help me get a job after law school? Do I need to do a DA gig first or something?

There? No.

USAO's don't take anybody right out of law school. It might help get you in the door a few years later, but definitely not right after law school.

Don't let that stop you, though. Still a great thing to do for the summer.

So, the main point is to do it just for the experience, then? I should have no hopes of going back there post-graduation (right after school), right? How does one get in there, eventually? I don't know much about the DOJ Honors Program, but I see it on this board every year.

It's absolutely worth it for the experience, but no, don't expect a job out of it.

USAOs don't participate in DOJ honors. (Maybe three in the nation do, but none of the more important ones.)

My understanding is that most USAOs usually take from law firms and DA offices, three or four years out of law school. Clerkships are pretty important also, I hear.

ty, ty. I heard about clerking and the DA route. I am assuming if you DA somewhere, it would be easier to get a USAO job in that area than in another. Probably, some place like DC would be pretty good with transitioning, since its USAO is a combination of the feds and its DA office.

There was a USAO on here a few weeks ago answering questions. He was pretty good.

That sounds about right.

DDC likes DA alums, because it's basically the same stuff. SD/EDNY like firm people, because they do a lot of white collar/finance-type stuff. Interestingly, where you do a clerkship doesn't seem to matter too much to what USAOs might be interested -- there seems to be a lot of mobility in that regard.

I've looked into it pretty significantly. I'm hoping to go to a major USAO myself a year or so from now.

No, but I did it after 1L. I echo the other guy -- definitely worth doing it for a summer, even if you can't expect an immediate job out of it.

DA work is not similar to AUSA work. SDNY rarely hires former ADAs

Traditional route is clerk then AUSA

Interning there is a big leg up because you can get AUSAs to act as a reference for you... which will help you get an interview.

I know in some districts, being an ADA in that district is helpful. I am talking non-SDNY, non-EDNY.

DEFINITELY no help in NY federal districts.

I'm pretty certain it's no help in CA districts, either.

Maybe you're right about SDNY (although I doubt that it's entirely true; they need people who know how to prosecute drug, bank robbery, child porn, etc cases like every other district), but this is certainly not true as a general rule. If you really stand out as an ADA you certainly have a better shot at AUSA than someone who's reviewed docs for 3 years in biglaw. I think the bigger issue is that most ADAs don't come from the schools/backgrounds of people who post here, and unless you're willing to put down roots in a particular place for awhile, it's not a job you're likely to end up with. So for the average xoxo poster, the more likely path is clerkship-firm-ausa. Also, if you think AUSA pay is bad, it's probably twice what ADAs make in a lot of places.

More broadly, you have to decide how much you want to be an ausa. I clerked in a TTT district, but the AUSAs were almost uniformly excellent lawyers (avg. age below 40) who had moved there from all over the country b/c they really wanted to do the job. The only local people were former ADAs (and a couple of blatant patronage hires). In other words, if you really want to do it, you probably have to be open to living outside DC and NY, and just apply to every vacancy you see until something works out.
