and justify it to themselves

No smoked salmon or coffee, but lots of pills that alter the brain and make you dumber. In what world do these women think it's a good idea to make your fetus more retarded

after the baby is born there is risk mother will harm the baby (postpartum depression/psychosis is not uncommon). a lot happening with hormones during and after pregnancy.

look, if there are cultures who uniformly refuse to take antidepressants and still manage to not kill newborns at a disproportionate rate, then these women can deal with it for the love of their children

i just can't believe these women willingly harm their own fetuses

these women don't belong to those cultures. but i think that's why doctors lean towards not taking women off these drugs if they have a history of needing it to function.

even if so, parents should love their kids more than anything and be willing to sacrifice their own desires (antidepressants) for them and control their own fucking emotions

otherwise, don't have kids if you aren't even willing to go 10 months without taking drugs

Can people on mental health drugs long term control their emotions? I don't blame the doctors who don't take them off. I blame the system that got them on drugs in the first place. What if something happens to the baby?

why are most other countries all able to reproduce without becoming addicted to antidepressants like the US?

thsee selfish women need to get over themselves

what about the fetal brain development? nobody cares about htat?

also, you make it seem like these women lack initiative and control. it's really their decision whether or not to take drugs at the end of the day.

and that depends on how much you are willing to sacrifice for your baby.

We need to appreciate the medical professional's risk though - knowing the high odds of postpartum disorders and someone's history of taking mental health rx, would you really ask them to get off mental health rx?

I mean as a doctor I'd medicate the patient if she begged me, but it's not my baby or child so I don't care at the end of the day. And it mitigates risk.

However, as a parent, I would never ever medicate myself even if I wanted to kill myself on a daily basis.

1/3rd of women w/history of depression will get postpartum depression

https://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/news/media/releases/genetic_predictors_of_postpartum_depression_uncovered_by_johns_hopkins_researchers

An estimated 10 to 18 percent of all new mothers develop the condition, and the rate rises to 30 to 35 percent among women with previously diagnosed mood disorders.

"Depression" is imo over diagnosed and over used. And of course new parents feel exhaustion, anxiety, hopeless, etc. - you aren't getting any sleep and feel like shit.

People weren't meant to feel happy or positive 100% of the time, and that's just something people have to live with. At the end of day, feeling neutral is something people should aim for. I don't know why society started thinking otherwise.

Not sure what obgyns tell moms but no way they give them carte blanche to take SSRIs in pregnancy. there are proven risks for neonatal adjustment syndrome with antenatal exposure to SSRIs. also unproven risks regarding delays in motor and cognitive abilities. I would imagine they just inform mom that these risks are largely unknown while there is known harm from abruptly stopping antidepressants and leave the decision to them. Their primary motivation here is presumably not to get sued for a fucked up baby or a fucked up mom

I'm mainly just shocked that there are so many mothers in the US who still willingly take the risk of permanently fucking up their babies cognitively. There's a long list of things that pregnant women can't do - yet somehow so many women still take SSRIs while adhering to stupid shit like not drinking tea.

American women are selfish and unfeminine. Remember when the CDC reminded women that they shouldn't drink during pregnancy and shrews all over Facebook were calling it a misogynist statement

Nutella couldn't even stop drinking for her baby. She drank throughout pregnancy and choose to decline breastfeeding so she could drink

if you lack impulse control, don't have kids
