I don't read fiction anymore, but if nonfiction, then some of the books written by social scientists in the Terror Management Theory school of thought have been fantastic for understanding the human relation to death, culture, religion etc...my fav in that vein is Corruption of reality by schumaker...also, denial of death by becker is the seminal work in that field...
