my wife works as a ADA and makes 39k a year. The state contributes 6% of her base pay into her pension. Is she going to be a millionaire? No. Then cops who give her shitty cases makes 100k+ a year with all their overtime and the state contributes 15% of their TOTAL end of year salary to their pensions.

It seems that many of their jobs are equivalent to a minimum wage job in the private sector. Others are just low wage. They mostly also work far fewer days and hours and have unheard of job security. I really dont think there is some gap there that needs to be met with a pension.

Wrong. In Orlando, even the small 10 person firms are starting new associates at around 100k/yr, but the PD and state attorneys are starting at 39k.

Ok. The two jobs still arent comparable and you are discussing only a tiny fraction of the public sector. Public sector attorneys might be kind of an exception.

Also, less than 20% of all law grads are able to land a 100k job. Im betting most of the 39k ADAs didnt.

Charter schools (the massive number of "private schools" that have been added recently) haven't been around nearly as long enough to have established teachers that cost more. So you're averaging new teaches vs the average of a group of people who are mostly older and more experienced. I can't imagine why the latter group would be paid more.

So? We have data now. Public schools, the vast majority of which aren't charter schools, pay their teachers more than private schools do.

And these teachers have more experience than the teachers at private schools. One of the big things private schools do is try to get teachers to sign these unenforceable noncompete agreements for 5 years -- because they're afraid after 2-3, the teachers will have enough experience to go work for the government.

Why should experience matter? Aren't results more important? Because someone has worked at a public school for 20 years, he's entitled to higher pay? Is that your argument?

2) Retard? Explain the consistently better results that private schools produce, even with students from the same socioeconomic backgrounds.

3) Why should requirements and rent-seeking licenses mattter? So if you pass licensing tests, that entitles you to a higher compensation regardless of the results you produce?

You're using this to refute my charge that they're not just taking the cream of the crop and claiming success. I am showing kids of low SES were not helped by charter schools. If you take the best and brightest and compare their test scores to average kids, their scores are higher but it isn't because of the new group. Individually, the kids haven't changed.

That looks only at benefits, not total compensation. This just shows that public sector employers have added benefits, it does not show if total total compensation is higher. My guess is private employers added to salary instead of benefits.

Because contrary to popular belief, a salaried person's income is not based on their contributions and difficulty of work (although there is a correlation), but rather politics (unions, workplace politics), what everyone else is paying similar positions, and what decisions maker deem important enough to pay a premium salary

Bro, have you even ever worked at all before? At an F500 or small business? There are droves of dumbasses who get paid pretty well for the little work they do due to their connections with upper management and perceptions that they're useful, as well as droves of peons (see - asians) who work hard day in and day out, get shit on, get a lot of their work unnoticed, and don't speak up for themselves

And in competitive environments like Silicon Valley, they're quickly fired or laid off. See HP, RIM, Dell, etc. In government? Not so much.

This is like me telling Krugman he doesn't understand supply and demand because he doesn't know how Yu-Gi-Oh trading cards work.

There are always inefficiencies. I don't know exactly how silicon valley works, but I'm guessing you get paid based on the success of your project or your last project.

So, if you create the iphone, you're going to get a big bump in pay because according to you, you've created "value."

But that's a juvenile way of looking at things. You don't really know what engineer was doing what developing the iphone. It's almost impossible to know if they were the weak link on the team or the star. On every successful project there are people who are much worse at their job than those on the losing projects - but there's absolutely no way for anyone to determine that value.

Moreover, the engineer of the ipod isn't really that much better at his job than the engineer of the sandisk player. They both function the same way. However, the ipod had slicker marketing behind it, and it had a cultural wave that bought into it. Yet, if both engineers walked into a firm - the ipod would get paid more despite doing the exact same job.

So you think every aspect of the ipod is noticeably superior to every engineering aspect of the zune?

And if true, you also think that every engineer who worked on the sandisk and zune is inferior to every engineer who worked on the ipod?

Because they all more or less get the same line on the resume.

this is the product btw of reptile Jeb Bush.

"Cities had long received money from the state for insurance policies sold within their city limits. The money was used to offset municipal pension costs for police and firefighters.

In 1999, in his first act as governor, Bush signed a bill that made that money contingent on improving benefits for first-responders. The Republican governor had promised to back the bill after winning the endorsement of the Florida Police Benevolent Association and Florida Professional Firefighters Association.

The law also stated that any increase in police officers' and firefighters' pension contributions must buy them greater benefits.

Bush's predecessor, Democrat Lawton Chiles, had vetoed a similar bill in 1998, citing the potential cost."
