I think the main reason is that, since Germany has few natural resources, it has always relied upon smart, hardworking people to fuel its economy. But with each passing year, Germans are having fewer kids, and they are importing free-loaders from Asia and Africa. I really don't see a way out of this for them.

a year and a half ago they decommissioned all their nuclear plants, which cost tens of billions to build, and replaced them with imports at a time when natgas and oil from russia became more difficult to obtain

That plus it is regulated and taxed to death. There was only so much leeway the EU had post-wwII recovery. Germans took all the promise of the Wirtschaftswunder and thought it would last forever and piled on regs and taxes.

I think the biggest change is obviously the greatly increased energy costs, which is a killer for an advanced, export-based economy

of course they are also over regulated and stagnant just like pretty much every other country in the EU

Yes, that's part of what I meant by "few natural resources." Their deal with Russia was not sustainable, given what Russians are like.

insane how cucked the leadership was/is to russia

the pipelines were terrible, but shutting down the nukes is an all time economic blunder. Germany is more responsible for this war than the rest of NATO combined

the split between the US and EU over the past 15 years has been astounding. Looks like this is just the sort of spiral that happens when you are old and overregulated.

They have delicious €2 pretzels everywhere that are better than any pretzels sold in the United States, they should have no problem attracting talent and capital.
