Date: April 12th, 2025 1:24 PM Author: Earl Dibbles Jr (πΎπ£) Andrew Lloyd Webber's 2004 adaptation in particular is the one and only one to watch, you could certainly read Gaston Leroux's original but with a Gothic romance where there's so much high art and singing I think the film really brings it to life. Art and love are portrayed as a path to the Divine but ofc they're also susceptible to carnality and corruption. self-sacrifice, forgiveness, compassion are needed to provide a path for salvation (especially for a tormented soul). (brings Frodo and Gollum to mind) The Phantom has a mysterious demi-god-like influence over the opera house which touch on questions like fate and hidden forces guiding are tiny, pink, human lives.

To me it evokes a mysteriously comforting vibe of wistfully soldiering on in the journey home, but then being touched by a momentary daydream vision of looking back down across it all, the scope of your mortal life, and being glad you kept going - like in one of those old Tolkienian stories - and really it was more about the fear of what could happen than what actually did happen…
…and then you’re back in the here and now, but somehow a friendly ghost of Everlasting Christmas future has rekindled that nice place to warm our hands by the fire in the Interior Redwall Abbey - and as Tolstoy once said, lovable hippie that he was, “Now see that you don’t forget!” |
